Apologies for the Americanism but I genuinely couldn't think of another word to describe my past five days of 997C2S ownership. Traded up from a 997C2 Tip and haven't stopped grinning since. Already put 500 miles (oops..) in five days and my last trip to pick up a takeaway turned into a two hour blast...!

Have to say the car is the absolute muts nuts and definitely a huge step up from my last Porsche. The 997 Carrera Tip always just felt as is something wasn't quite right and the 997C2S has certainly fixed all of those issues. Anybody considering getting a 997 do it, they really are that good..!! However, a couple of words of advice based on real experience:

- Make sure its a Carrera S (don't believe the sales guy, you can tell the power difference)
- Make sure its a manual..!!! (please please don't buy a Tip Porsche...)
- Make sure you go for the Chrono Plus (the dash top dial, etc are pure cheese but the Sport button is worth the cash alone... Superb..!!)
- PSE (get mine fitted next week..!!)
- 2WD (based on driving experience can't think what 4WD would realistically add to the car - take the cash and spend on options instead)

Porsche - feckin' love'em..!!

Can you clarify - I didn't really want PCM (Sat Nav) in my soon to be specced GT3 so cant have sport chrono plus only the ordinary chrono option.
Does the ordinary chrono option have this sport button? And what does this button actually do?
Cheers - Phil

997GT3: The exact explanation as per Porsche is:

"When ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the engine management system applies a new set of variables to enhance the engine response. A modified throttle map relates the pedal angle in the footwell to a much wider angle of opening in the throttle. As a result, the engine has a much more positive reaction to every pedal input. In the higher gears, a hard rev-limiter helps protect the engine under acceleration.

While this is happening, PASM (standard on the S and 4S models, optional on all others) is also switching to ‘Sport’ mode. The dampers become firmer, enabling faster turn-in as well as better road-holding and traction.

On vehicles with Tiptronic S, the automatic gearshifts become faster and more dynamic. Lift off the throttle – even at high revs – and the system immediately shifts down to apply engine braking. There are no unwanted upshifts in manual mode when approaching the engine rev limit. Since the driver has full control over every upshift, the handling of the car is much more secure, particularly when braking for a corner.

To minimise assistance from PSM, the trigger threshold for this system is raised. The result is a more natural and involving response to lateral and longitudinal forces. Agility is enhanced under braking for a corner, with PSM enabling greater manoeuvrability when turning in and greater stability on the exit – particularly in lower-speed sequences and bends.

For maximum dexterity, PSM can be set to standby while the car is still in ‘Sport’ mode. PSM simply monitors the forces acting on the car and will only intervene in the most critical scenarios, e.g., when ABS assistance is required on both front brakes.

To help you quantify this increased performance, the Sport Chrono Package Plus includes a swivel-mounted timer on the dashboard. Functions are accessed via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analogue dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. The digital field runs in parallel with a second display conveniently located in the instrument cluster.

Individual lap times can be viewed, stored and analysed using a special performance display in PCM. The information available includes time elapsed and distance travelled on the current lap, as well as the number of laps completed and their respective times. You can also view the current fastest lap and the remaining range till empty. Driving times can be recorded for any stretch of road and benchmark times defined. Other useful features include a personal memory function which is also controlled via PCM. This can be used to store personal preferences for a range of systems, including daytime running lights, ‘Welcome Home’ lighting, optional automatic air conditioning and door-lock settings"

I'm therefore guessing that without the PCM you will get everything apart from the various readouts etc that are viewed via the system.

To be honest most of the system is fairly cheesy (esp the dash dial) but the Sport button truly is great - the throttle response is superb. Driving with the Sport button on for 30mins or so and then turning it off you really notice the difference. For us non-tecchies it feels like another 50bhp has just magically appeared under your right foot..!!

Totally agree with everything you say except the sport button. Its a gimmick ! It does nothing that makes the car go faster and is just a psychological gimmick. Leave it well alone imho.
