Strange noise from my Freelander

sounds like a groaning noise....(my wife describes it as a cow 'mooing')
happens on start up when idling for 30 secs or so and then every so often when on the move - almost always when there's some right hand lock on the steering
car is a '51 plate and drives absolutely fine otherwise
must be something to do with the steering I thought but the power steering fluid level looks ok
any thoughts?
