I'm looking to change the std box on my 2001 2.7 to give it more of a sound-track and possible power increase would be a bonus - though not looking at changing cats etc, so appreciate wouldnt get much. Don't want to go crazy on the cost, but do want a significant increase in noise..currently no wife to get annoyed by it! Seen them from Dansk, and Janspeed, but would appreciate any views/advise from on here. Cheers

I'm In a similar situation to you. Got a '03 986 S and have been looking at the various options. I was looking into getting one of the ones you see off ebay. They are a stock muffler off a boxster then a bloke in germany welds some bypass ppipes from the entry to the silencer section to the exits. If you do a search for boxster muffler on ebay you find one.

Have a listen to the soundfile, sounds wicked! although might be a bit loud for track days etc.

The only others relativley cheap ones I found are the Dansk and the Janspeed. The porsche Tequipment one is a rip off.

There are others like Tech-Art, supersprint and Fabspeed but I think they're a bit expensive.

Hi

I have a 2002 Boxster S and have been looking at the same thing.

So far the only system that didn't cost a arm and a leg is the Borla exhaust.
Problem is that I read on a forum that they actually cost you power in the end.
A factory rep assured me otherwise, but no dyno charts are available. No way I am trading power for sound.

If anybody has the Borla fitted please give us your experience.

Andy/carfanatic - do drop me a mail if you decide on one. Will have another look at the one on ebay - think its the one where the black boxster is ragging round a carpark!?

Just had a look at the ebay one, and does look a bit strange with those pipes - would this system increase performance? Does seem like a cheap way of getting one, but don't want a bodged job.

You basically have 3 options;
1, The single box, twin outlet type like Dansk & porsche Tequipment, these give minimum sound change & minium hp gain.
2, The split, 2 box type like Tech-Art, supersprint and Fabspeed, these give around 15-17 hp gain and around 78-87 Db
3, The third option is to special order race version of the 2 box type which are louder ( 95-105Db ), but the pay off is that they drone around 3,000rpm ( top gear at motorway speed ) with no added hp!

Hope this helps.

Has anyone ever bottomed out this thread??????

I got offered a SUPERSPRINT back box for me 986 2.7 for £600 (all in) and if I thought for one minute it would give me anything remotely approaching the power gains quoted earlier I would buy like a shot!!!!

Has anyone heard one of these fitted?

Guys, i bought from these guys last year for my 986s.
http://stores.ebay.de/OETTLES-TUNING-

I can tell you: i was blown away.
Fantastic sound, no drone, no mid range ennoying sound.
They just weld pipe on an existing porsche exhaust, which is basically the principle porsche apply to their own 'sport exhaust'.

Order one and get a specialist to fit it.

I have absolutely no affiliation with these people, but their exhaust changed my experience of the boxster, it was like having a new car, so i thought reasonable to praise them.

Regards,
Eric.

If you have a Boxster S (pre 1st facelift) then just remove the snorkel behind the passenger side air duct. Gives the car a real snarl over 4k revs, and its free.

exhaust alone will not give you a single bhp.

It could even loose you a few...

I remember a few years back when some guys from boxsta.net did a proper rolling road testing.
The results were astonishing.

The only persons who gained very moderate bhp (we are talking 5 odd bhp' s) were those who did the combo air filter, chip, full exhaust (headers, sport cat, back box)....

Sorry to be a party spoiler.

However, once again, this 'oettle' exhaust did a lot for me!

It gave me the impression that my car was faster (amazing what sound alone can do!).

It also made the car keener to rev.

Eric.

Regarding changing exhaust box ,My 2000 S is Bog std and at Snetterton the other week I had no trouble what so ever staying with a 996 3.4 along the main straight pulling to 7200 rpm easily. The main advantage of changing the o/e box is one of weight saving. The o/e one weighs a ton and taking the weight of the back must help the handling making it even better. Also they are smaller giving easier access if you want to work on the back end.
