I've been asked to source an 0800 or 0845 number. I've done the normal googling and found the prices vary hugely. BT charge between £500 and £3000 to purchase the number whereas others don't charge at all for 0800 and a smaller fee for 0845.

Anyone have any good experiences? The number isn't of huge importance, its more the ability to forward to either an office phone or a mobile, so ease of changing the forwarding number is important.

If there are any companies to avoid, please email me rather than breaking the no-shaming rules of the site.

Many thanks

I have use Robotelecom in Hemel Hempstead for the past 3 years with our 0845 numbers.

The cheapies (from which I found 0845 644 2401 and 0845 644 2403) cost £20 and can be pointed to any uk landline (not sure about mobiles) they are even offering enhanced services such as divert on un-answered and the like.

How about that.

We can provide 08xx numbers that you can manage via a secure website and point them to either a landline or mobile phone.

Shoot me a mail via my profile if you want me to give you a call and run through some options with you.

You don't need to pay for an 0845 number although a Provider may want you to move your calls to them in return for giving you the numbers for free.

Either someone like me (and I work for this lot www.southern-comms.co.uk ) or Rich (He was there first) can sort you out with a number.

As a rule of thumb you should only pay for really pucker numbers so unless you want 0845 100 100 you keep your wallet in your pocket.

Thanks for the replies. I knew it sounded stupid to pay hundreds for a number.

Rich - sent you an email as you were the first to reply with an offer of help.

Cheers

Please keep your geographic number as well. I and millions of others have a calling package which means we can call normal (01, 02) numbers for free, but we have to pay for 0845, 0870 etc. Not surprisingly I hate paying for things twice.

The Ofcom Numbering review means that in approx 12-15 months, 08xx calls should be included in bundle packages.
