Not easy as you came from a Boxster...you may love the step up in performance of the 996 & feel at home straight away.
You may get in a 993 & think the interior is a step backwards (ok I know it's traditional).
As to which car that is totally down to you.I am a huge fan of both.I prefer late 996 to 993 but 993RS to any 996!
In terms of value, this will be interesting.the last 993 are now 5 years old so are getting into enthusuast territory.there is a good chance the best of the last air cooled cars will be sought after.Having said that a 996 will be cheaper to maintain.
In terms of build no doubt that last 993 are better than early 996,,which is the 996 you get in this price range.
i think it will take a good 18mths for the proposed next facelift or 997 model to impact values of the £30k models..I am not trying to sit on the fence, but I think in terms of depreciation there will be very little in it.
Go drive them both & either way I don't see choosing one car over the other a wrong decision.

Agree with clubsport.
For your budget best to get a very late, nicely fettled 993 than a very early 996 which may harbour problems.
If you get a 993RS you will not understand this phrase 'depreciation' which people sometimes refer to on this forum.
Any other 993 will lose money. The turbo will be a lot of fun though, and is available for about 35k in LHD form.

I saw that one...it's at some place in Liverpool...too many miles for me....i saw a rhd in porky post that was £45k tracked to death with welded in full cage...too extreme.
Looking for low miles v tidy prefer rhd but consider lhd if car is immac......I am a nightmare to myself..I need the buying challenge & took 18mths to find my last Clubsport.I don't expect it to turn up anytime soon, but any leads would be appreciated.
cheers...

I disagree. IF you can find a good, low miles 993 you are laughing. They are going for more money than early 996's as they are now out of production. The same thing happened a few years ago with the LOTUS ELAN S2-good ones wwere making more money than later ELises simply because if you wanted one the only route was 2nd hand.
Try looking through the Sunday times classified or speaking to dealers-993's are GOOD news and the last cars (N & P reg) with reasonable miles are regularly for sale at mid-lates £30's.
The only way early 996 values are going is down. I've seen 98 R 996 Carrera 2's at 50k ish struggle to make £30k at auction. There are too many to choose from.
I would have loved a 993 (almost any variant) if I could have got a good, low miles example. Yes, the interior is dated and yes they cost loads more to service but they look/sound/drive fantastic (IMHO)
The BIG problem for me was paying £30k plus for a car over 5 years old with 30k plus on it. I just couldnt justify it. Hence got a Boxster S. If you have a low miles rhd 993 then you are laughing as I think they will end up losing NO more money..........

Hmmm, even a RHD late low miles 993 will be inclined to lose money compared to a 993RS, as a general rule. They just made too many of them, and there isn't the fanatical following that the lightweights have. Look at RHD late low miles 993RSs and if you find one it may be around the 60k mark, ie basically going for almost their 70k LIST price! I don't see 993C2s going for 50k, no matter how lovely they are...
IMHO the 993RS will have solid gold residuals over the next ten years, and yes, a low mileage C2 in concourse condition will always find a buyer, but even tracked 993RSs will hold their own.
Clubsport - try www.911-rs.de for a good selection of RSs, often low mileage, from respected RS specialist Hermann and Schmitz in Germany. They have a lovely 993RS with GT2 turbo engine for sale, if you are rich/man enough
Have to agree about 996s shedding their value though. They are a bit of a bargain at the moment. Very cheap, all things considered, and certainly not the traders' favourite from what I've heard. I think oversupply makes them difficult to shift or something.

Am i blind? I can't see it! Found a yellow 993RS with GT2 bodykit, and a real 993GT2 (for 165,000 Euros) but not the car you mentioned.

Can you send me the link?

Hi VS,,,,,after our bhp fixes last week...I have somehow seen TWO proper 1998 Turbo "S"...one in metallic black, the other midnight blue.the black one is parked around the corner from my office....not as dramatic as Paul's Glorious speed yellow though.
Not bad to see 10% of the 30 made ina week and not going near a Porsche dealership.

back to the original post.....like any market the major factor determining price is supply & demand.
As a few of have pointed out with 993 RS 43 rhd cars,7 x rhd RSR..blah..blah...defined market.
With late 993 early 996 market,,,the other factor to consider is the Boxster...particularly the "S" having seen early examples just under £30k this is going to be of interest to prospective buyers...Box & 996 due to numbers built are gonna go down,,but you cannot have a 8 year old pre varioram 60k miles 993 trading much higher than a 3 year old 30kmiles Box "s"..This will soon be arbed out of the marketplace.

highway said: Domster-I meant mileage 50kish. No 993 c2 is worth £50k!!! But as I said, nice as the RS undoubtedly is a nice 993 (low miles rhd) would have done me. But you wont get one like I would want (sub 20k miles) for less than £25k.
I know you meant the mileage

Getting a very nice 993 for 25-30k makes a huge amount of sense. They are a great 'everyday' Porsche and far better value than these overpriced RSs I harp on about

Pete, I was sent details of this car on a PDF through Melv, 964RS register afficionado and fellow PHer. I scanned the list and saw the beauty I mentioned previously, but it may not be on the website for some reason. Maybe Melv could send it to you (not sure I have it), or email Thomas Schmitz and I'm sure he'll forward it to you.
Or it may have sold already, of course.
Cheers
