Thinking of buying a new Dell laptop off ebay (approx £500/Dell Inspiron 6400). Apparently, it would come with 12 months warranty etc. Is there anything I should be aware of....or should I deal direct with Dell.

Yes you should be aware of buying computer items full stop of ebay. As you are not the original owner of the machine the warranty may not be applicable to you so if it done work then you may have problems. Besides a Dell is not a great machine and you could get a nice one for around £500 from a reputable supplier if you look around.

I got a refurbed Toshiba laptop from here for about £500:

Comes with a warranty, too. Very pleased! So I'd certainly recommend you have a look here before investing lots of money in a laptop from eBay.

new dells on eBay are usually obtained from Dell as returned/refurbishedcancelled items which are effectively new. You can buy them direct from Dell yourself.

I agree with you on your points, but I have to take umbrage with comment regarding the Dells not being great.

Battery issue aside, all I eve recommend is Dells due to cost, spec and the quality of the laptop.

I'm sure a few others will agree...

I brought my Dell XPS Gen 2 from ebay, using PayPal as I don't have a CC. It came with the full 3yr warranty and is registered to me as it's legal owner. It came in a sealed Dell packing crate with all disks/manuals/paperwork. The warranty is transferable between people.

Dell are themselves not that bad a brand these days; discounting the battery issue as it's not a fault with Dell but with Sony's batteries you'll find that most Dell laptops are pretty sturdy beasts. The rate of devices that fail seems to be within normal statistics for such things; I wouldn't personally recommened a low end Dell desktop system but have no issues with telling people to buy a laptop from them.

You may want a higher spec one, but the 6400's start at £489 inc vat and del on Dell's main (not even the refurb) site.

There's nothing wrong with buying Dell laptops off E-bay, per se, but obviously you should shop around to see if you're getting a fair price particularly if an auction goes bonkers. I've bought a couple of Dell laptops on E-bay myself and got good value. Dell makes perfectly good laptops too.
