Anyone use Photographersdirect.com? Basically its a way to sell your pictures, much like stock photography. The difference being you get a greater amount per picture but may sell less pictures.

Companies submit requests for pictures, which you recive by email, you then upload example photos and they choose which one they want to use and you can negotiate a price for them. Photographersdirect take 10% IIRC.

It's no use to me as my pics are pretty crap, but I have seen some brilliant shots on here that may sell. Obviously check out the website yourself if you are interested, if anyone has had any bad experiences with them feel free to post.

Example email i received from them:

photographers direct said:

Date : 13th August 2006
Deadline : 16th August 2006
Request No.4937
Request Title: BULL HEAD LOOKING DOWN
Request:
need an image of a bull head looking down (real bull, not statue)

as close as possible to this:

www.photographersdirect.com/tempimages/Bull.jpg

Format : either landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical)
Use : editorial
Budget
Other Usage : US$80.00

Seen prices from $80 to $300 per picture. Can be higher if they are using the picture for lots of purposes.

Cheers,

Stuart

as a commercial photographer i often have a look at that site, micro sites are killing my profession and designers and agencies who use them should be ashamed of themselves. at least photographers direct pay a reasonable amount for decent shots. rant over

Andy, I understand your comments but as a web designer, I'm not ashamed to use microstock. More often than not I use the free stuff at www.sxc.hu

If designing a site for £400 for a small local business, how much of that £400 should I be giving to a pro photographer for stock images used in my design - especially when I'm already giving 40% of it to the taxman!?

Microstock isn't preventing me from using traditional stock agencies because I can't afford to use those in the first place with my margins.
