Can anyone tell me what the least would be, to get a decent and reliable 996 turbo?

I really feel that this car is where i want be next change, but am concerned that the money i have may only run to a high-mileage/tracked example which will cost me a fortune in repairs and upkeep.

How important is mileage on these and what goes wrong before, say, 100,000 miles, other than the usual consumables like brakes, tyres, clutch?

Thanx.

PS
I guess i have about £50K to spend, private sale.

Some people seem to have problems with all the radiators. It would be fair to point out that quite a number would have been dms'd with +75 PS approx and whether or not there are any which have done significant miles to prove the reliability or otherwise of such conversions I'm not sure.

The amount you are suggesting should get you there, you did not say what part of the county your in, but try some of the indy traders such as RSJ who have a nice car. If your going private get it checked out and buy the Porsche Warranty.

Don't ever assume because the car has been tracked that it's a Turkey!

There are a few guys over on another forum, that are up to 90/100k on their 996 Turbos and their still going strong! You are going to spend money with regular servicing plus it will need bits & bobs that's for sure, but it's the same as any other car in my opinion (except bloody Porsche pricing)

You could tell if it's been flashed/chipped by checking the boost, but again there is nothing wrong with a car (in my opinion!) that's had a tweek or two.

It might be worth asking another member who is into their 996Turbo to accompany you when you have found the vehicle you are looking for! I would do it for a fellow member for sure! (don't ask me, i'm in Scotland, lol)

I would buy it! it's a great ride!!!

I've got a 52 996TT, which I bought for £57k back in May. The car has covered 18K miles and to date has had all three radiators replaced! Touch wood, I've had few other problems to date. Porsche warranty has proved invaluable and has been no quibble. I think you'll struggle to pick up a lower mileage good example for less than £55k based on the cars I looked at.

Just to add, Porsche warranty is wise (agreed)!

This example looks really good value to me ...and its a 51-Reg so you will get the updated interior which was introduced in Sep-01. Not much difference from the old interior but more desirable when you come to re-sell.

That looks a good buy!

6 speed, good miles, good price, (personally) not to keen on the silver and we won't talk about Sat Nav, but I would say overall a pretty good example.

Buy it! you know you want to!

There are two cars on the Porsche GB web site under £50k, just Both will come fully prepared and with the 12 month warranty which is vital with used Porsche's. You may even get to barter the price down a bit if you are pushy with the dealership.

I have been watching with interest, as I am planning on selling in a month or so (one more holiday to go).

I reckon my 03/52 car with 17k miles is worth around £57k and that is only as it is top end on condition and useage and still in the warrnty scheme. That is non - chipped and absolutely standard. I would have thought you should be able to get a 2001 or 2002 car with say 30k on it for close to £50k in pretty good shape.

Not too many problems - but radiators yes, they corrode on low mileage cars I am told (having mine done shortly).

Servicing not too bad, but the plug change is a biggish job on this age of car - 4 yrs is normally when it needs doing for lowish miles. Get a warrnaty though, not worth risking without one.

Remember the 4 year service will be over a grand, and a new clutch is 2.5 since it's an engine out job...

I heard the rads suffer as debris (wet leaves etc) get in, get stuck, then corrode the rads.
Is this right ? If so I can make sure they are cleaned out on a regular basis.

Agreed - I thought the same. I can understand the guys concern but he could have put it a lot better. Makes him come across as an idiot and not someone who you'd want to buy a car off.

Really interesting to read about that radiator problem. Over here in Germany I never read anything like it in P-forums. Does is thave to do with the rather open "mouth" of the air-intake at the front ? I already thought to myself whether it would make sense to put some mesh in there (reducing the amount of airflow a bit, of course). Any experiences with that or alternatives ?

I'm often amazed that people who have worse grammar and punctuation than my 7 year old daughter have managed to get together the budget for such an expensive car!

Anyhow, I was told when I had mine inspected by the OPC before I bought it that provided you clean out the rads (and you can easily see the leaves/fag ends accumulating in there) there should be no problem. It's a design flaw for sure.

Couple of potential reasons for replacing rads:

1 - Stone chips.
2 - Internal corrosion
3 - External corrosion caused by leaf/gunk build up.

Make any purchase conditional on the vendor getting the car upto scratch so it can have a porsche waranty.
