Bye bye corporate life - Hello painting and decorating!
Discussion
Having decided that I have worked for @rsh0le$ for too long I have jacked it in and set up as a painter and decorator with a bit of property maintenance and repairs thrown in. I've been doing up my own houses for the last 30 years so thought it was about time to cash in on my skills!
Just wondered what people expect to pay for such services? Obviously "nothing" would be good
but a few examples would be helpful to me to pitch my quotes. I realise there will be regional variations.
Anyone had any work done that they would care to share what the costs were? Hourly rates, daily rates etc etc.
Cheers
Neil

Hi & good luck.
To give you an idea. (Merseyside). Just had a quote to repaint a bedroom ceiling & a corner of another ceiling after the flat above flooded. Came in at £175.
Recently had the whole place repainted (ouch). Walls & ceilings & woodwork throughout. That was kitchen, lounge, stairway, V.small landing. v. small entry vestibule, bedroom & bathroom. Also included repairs & external repainting of 4 windows.
Took him about 2 weeks. £1300 incl paint.
Thanks for all the replies and good wishes!
£120 a day seems to be about the going rate as confirmed locally as well - so it will pay the bills for a while
Great feeling though, might get a slight pang when month end comes and there's no paycheque from the old firm anymore!!
Cheers
Neil
PS - Just need to find room for the Pistonheads sticker now!

Been thinking about doing the same myself, made a very good profit on my current house, sick of being stuck in an office (last 12years) working for bosses who have no common sense at all.
Has anyone completed some of the 5 day courses offered to improve your painting skills or give you an introduction to plastering.

First rule of working for yourself in home improvements- never quote a daily rate. Always price by the job. If for some reason you cannot avoid quoting a time-related rate then it will need to be an hourly rate, because if you quote a daily rate the first question will be how many hours is that?
When pricing a job think in terms of £20 an hour plus materials, then bend it up or down depending on the circumstances.

I was an accountant but now I fit floors. F@@@ing hard work but got a TVR Tuscan, TVR Griffith, BMW 545i and a Merc SLK350, (and no disposable income!). Go for it, you won't look back!!
Your PH posting rate is really suffering though - you're averaging 6 per year!!
Having just been quoted £2500 for a floor which I've just bought the wood to do myself for £650 I can see there is money to be made in this game.
Left IT Project Management 4 years ago, and setup as a Property Maintenance company. Painting and Dec, general maint, bathroom fitting etc. I do have the quals as I went to college to learn as the grand plan was to build my own house.
I live in Wiltshire, and charge around £150 a day plus materials, if its small stuff I base the charge on £25 an hour. But as already stated, use that as a guide and don't tell customers its £££ a day.
I wouldn't bother with the intro to plastering course, its a skill that takes a while to master, and 5 days will probably only teach you how to mix plaster :-)) use a tradesman for plastering jobs, unless you can do it really well. Repair plastering is not such an issue.
Good luck
