Engine started, nearly wet myself until I realised it was the wraps bedding in. I got her running at a smooth idle at 1200rpm, but the adaptives on the even bank kept running away to 30+, accompanied by a few pops and sqeaks from the drivers side bank. Will have a play tomorrow........

p.s. and yes, I've had a few beers hence the typos!!!!!

Looks like my 4.2 engine with painted rockers. A very nice job.

Yes, just a normal 4.2 put together with a lot of love and affection! Thanks for the support guys, its been a long slog. Yesterday was a bit of a blur, the oil lines arrived and I just didn't stop for about 6 hours..... The oil priming method worked a treat, giving positive pressure on the gauge before I even turned it over on the starter, but be warned it puts a BIG strain on the drill which started smoking after a few seconds! Throttle response was instantaneous so I'm hoping the mechanicals are fine and that I just need to get the link rod/pots set up - had a play but jeez they are sensitive. Oil pressure was good, 80psi cold and oil temp gauge was working, started to indicate 65degrees after a few short runs. No leaks either, just need to get round the problem of gasing myself with the engine running, so off to B&Q again, will post later on results of some fine fettling!!

Looks like a top secret dry sump system , once the wheel and hamster are attached to that spindle it will be working perfectly ! That engine looks lovely and clean without the aircon pump, I might take mine off , well done Windsor .

hehe First time I used this stuff I took it for a short drive as per instructions to heat the bandage up, the car isn't exactly subtle at the best of times but at the first junction I came to a halt next to a traffic car and promptly started churning out plumes of smoke from under the bonnet.

Well, it seems I have an unusual problem. Trying to get the idle down, I screwed in the idle stop fully and the engine kept running!!! Airflow was 10kg/hour using a synchrometer, and it should be around 6. By pressing the spindle closed I got the car to a nice, steady idle at 950rpm with the apadptives stable at around 5-10. So, it seems that rounding the edges off my throttle plates may have been a step too far!! Had no idea the throttles would be that sensitive, and I was careful not to remove any material from the bores around the throttles when porting them. Well, won't be doing that again....... If anyone has some spare 4.2 intake plates lying around, please email me!! But, apart from this all systems are working fine and so a good result overall given the million and one things that could have gone horribly wrong but didn't. These AJP8 thingies are wicked though, I'd forgotten how bloody quickly these engines rev, and how loud they are too eek All the neighbours were giving me concerned looks as they were walking past the fence this morning hehe ....

Could you not just put a new set of throttle plates back in it, rather than the whole inlet confused. Out of interest anyone know what sizes are the standard 4.2 and 4.5 plates confused.

Right, still struggling. On the throttles using the synchro, cylinder 8 is showing around 7kg/h, the rest are around 10, so I just can't get it set-up. There is also a squeaking/chirping noise from the engine. Now, in the build manual its says the throttle plates must be correctly oriented in order to close and seal. Now, I didn't follow the manual for these and just stuck them back in randomly, can someone shed some light on this please, its driving me nuts. I guess if the throttles aren't completely sealed when supposedly closed, hopefully this is causing my idling nightmare. Someone tell me these plates are assymetrical right?

Sorry Windsor, I can't shed any light on your throttle problems, but that garage of yours' is sure looking a little different than last time I saw it, when your all up & running we'll have to get out & make some noise together!
In the mean time if you need any help in the final build up & need a car to compare to, I can easily pop round, I do owe you one afterall!

Hiya Pete! Just a few teething problems hopefully, when she's going well definitely have to go out for a blast!

Joolz, any chance you can explain what might be causing spit back on number 2 cylinder only? I removed the intakes and noticed that cylinder 2 intake was quite a bit blacker than the rest and it was spitting back intake charge occasionally, accompanied by the odd flame from the exhaust!! Could this be caused by a leak where the exhaust manifold meets the head?? And have you ever had a Cerb squeak/chirp before??? Cheers

Ooh, and can I just buy any old 45mm intake butterflies? I know they are not 45mm in a perfect circle, but assume that a 45mm butterfly is a standard shape??
