Hi chaps, could you please settle a recent discussion in my office.

Is receiving phone calls from recruitment agencies at your desk in work hours reason for dismissal?
What about if you're showing interest in the position?

Cheers

Ooohh not sure about that.

I remember working for an employer a good number of years ago and the employer warned the recruitment agency off for ringing it's staff.

If they are a good enough employer they should not need to worry

Unless your current employer stipulate a 'no personal calls' rule (or similar) whilst at your desk.

If you are a freelance consultant then the likelihood is that your client requires NO reason for immediate dismissal, depending on what it says in your contract of course.

Showing interest would be bad from IMHO, unless you are coming to the end of an assignment.

No this is no reason to let anyone go unless is was done time after time and unless specific warnings were given about office conduct.

Some employers will view it as a sign of decommittal. Naturally. Hence most people keep it really rather secret...After all - it may not be grounds for dismissal but it surely isn't going to make one's current employer feel like you're committed to them!

This happens to me quite a lot. I field the call at my desk and if I'm in a position where I'm looking for work, I either walk away from my desk (assuming it's convenient) or take a name/number and call back.

I'm not sure that it's a dismissal offence in itself, but it's at least bad form to show interest whilst at your desk. IMHO, like.

I would say, for a definitive answer, you need to check your contract but I would imagine there are clauses to do with personal calls/soliciting for other work.

We get it quite often here. I personally just tell them i'm not interested then go and have a chuckle with the MD.
