OK, geek on.

I'm currently running Fedora 5 on my desktop, and have been playing with VMWare.
It's most cool.

Windows XP Pro has installed on what it thinks is a 192Mb machine with a 12 Gig HD, a couple of DVD drives and various other bits and bobs. It has network access , DHCPs to the router, can seen the home workgroup and talk to the other XP laptop, the updates work, and it thinks it is farming.

Of course, it's *really* running as a shared VM on the Linux kernal on my desktop. Which makes mounting the XP partitions up on the Linux box via the network even more amusing (as they're actually held on the same disk).

It looks a bit like this (warning, 600+kb .png file)

Not sure what I'm actually going to use the thing for, but I digress though.

As you can also see, I have configured a solaris 10 virtual machine. And downloaded the ix86 DVD files, created the ISO.

I can mount the ISO image up on the HD, such that the Solaris VM sees it as a bootable DVD rom, GRUB boots and gives me the option to boot off DVD and install the OS.

When I try this however, it boots, flashes some colours at me, and reboots again. Not useful.

So, has anyone out there had any experience installing Solaris 10 as a virtual machine under RedHat Fedora 5? Or am I the only person stupid enough to try it.

Does VM offer solaris as one of the options for installing a guest OS?

The fact it is running on Fedora shouldn't make any difference, the vm hardware shown to the hosted OS is the same.

What version of VMWare are you using?

We've run Solaris 10 on ESX Server without any issues.

Have you read this? - http://pubs.vmware.com/guestnotes/wwh

The VMWare guru at work is running Deadrat, Winblows, Suse (*) & Slowlaris all on the same box without issues, so I know it can be done.

Have you tried booting the Slowlaris ISO "standalone" to see if it's a good one?

(* Anyone got a rude name for Suse?)

Running multiple OS's is really dead easy - if you can run 1 OS, you can run 10. We run Solaris, Redhat and various Windows on about 20 ESX boxes running literally hundreds of machines.

Solaris 10 support is relatively new, and you need the later versions of of ESX for it to be supported so knowing the actual version of the virtualisation software would be useful in this case.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

My next move is to burn the ISO image to DVD, and see if it boots. If that's cool, I'll investigate that particular version of solaris and vmware further.

It should bloody work..... I am determined that it shall.
