It may be worth trying the BCS website. I've carried out gap analysis on sizeable (£m) IT projects but we've not used templates, just the business requirements, spec, strategic outline etc.
It may also be worth posting this in the business section as well? Sorry this may not be much help, Dave
PS Psychobert has been a mgt consultant for some time and may have more ideas.

Whats a gap analysis?!
I understand it to be an analysis after a project has been completed. One that compares what was wanted/asked for, with what was delivered. The difference between the two being the "gap". A bit more detailed/specific than a post-implementation review. But I could be wrong.

We used to do 'gap analysis' on girls in the pub. Widest we found was 4 inches!! That is huge man! She had tight jeans on, but still, we thought maybe she had two, er, wotsits down there. Or maybe that it went the other way, like Chinese girls

Is there anything in the formal methodologies for this?
Does RUP have a GAP method?
Does RUP have a GAP method?
Not sure, but place my butt is sitting in have a rigid methodology that doesnt include one for a Gap Analysis...
And the Programme I'm working on is 200m Euro..
So I'm going to make one up.
Rich,
A gap analysis in banking or IT is pretty simple.
1st section: detail presnt state of the system
2nd sectin: detail what the end state should be like (ie what the users want)
3rd section: the gaps, ie what needs to change in the present system to make it into the new system desired. Be sure to include business process and policies to change and applications/sysetms that will need to be updated
Genrally a gap analysis is pretty high level and the more detailed document is firstly the requirements doc and then the functional spec doc.

Thanks,
I knew what it is, just wanted to save time by stealing someone elses template
... And its clear that everyone thats ever been involved in one has a totally different view on where the thing is targeted.
Oh and it has to map to the rigid methodology in use as well which doesnt help.
There are loose guidelines (rather than rigid templates to complete) which give basically a long list of things you need to think about in order to complete a gap analysis. So, for example for an IT system I'd be wanting someone doing a gap analysis to not only look at the IT itself, but the architecture on which it is built, any other IT running on the same architecture and in addition business processes, culture of the organisation, and lots of the softer human factors..
The tricky bit is that there are suggested methodologies for gap analysis, (not many, but I'm sure in the past I had to stick to one for a particular client), and they tend to be domain specific, (i.e. for an IT implementation, they will simply concentrate on the differences between requirements and existing functions etc). IMHO, they tend to be be too narrow in focus.
I'll have a dig through my files and see if I can find anything of use..

Edited again - Damm, Petclub, you could have said that quietly, or said I ran a brothel, slightly more socially acceptable
