Windows XP virus removal, numpty help needed

I have Windows XP Home and have found some viruses/Trojans with AVG and Spybot, but on re-booting they're back again. I think I need to change a Windows setting temporarily to stop them restoring themselves, but I'm blowed if I can find it.

Right click My Computer, select Properties.
System Restore tab.
"Tun Off System Restore". Should be a check box.
Click Ok. It'll flash up a warning about 'stuff' tell it your a big boy now and you don't need it to hold your hand whilst you cross the road (or just click Ok again).
