is there a chip for £100?
Discussion
Basically no. Anyone who tries and sell you a chip for hundred quid is just fleecing your money from you unless it's a Tornado Chip you intend to get re-mapped.
The TVR fuelling system is quite agricultural and the engines are to a degree bespoke - i.e each one will have pros and cons.
For a chip upgrade there really is only one person to speak to..

I have to say is the original program wrong in the Lucas/TVR chip then? As unless youve upgraded something or thrown the AFM away or something I cant really see why youd want to chip it as it can only control fuel and Im sure it cant be wrongly set up from new or am I missing something here?

Dom @ Power does an upgrade chip - I have one in my Chim.
No remapping required. I dont think its £100 but its no where near the cost of a Tornado chip.
Speak to Ian @ TorqueRVT (01606 831 244) - he has some and has fitted quite a few (Griffs & Chims)

I had one in my Chim for a while as well (when I had a lumpy cam in it)... sat on a shelf at the moment, so fee free to make me an offer..

I seem to of put the cat amongst the pigeons on this one, sorry, and I'll post this on the other thread too, to avoid any confusions.
There are generic chips about, Mark Adams has the Tornado, there's the TVR Power chip, etc etc that effectively improve fueling on a generic basis and the £100 was what i was told would be the rough cost if i was to go that route, now whether that was to me as Joe Public or to me as a racing driver in the paddock, I don't know, I can only report what I was told.
At the end of the day a chip costs pennies to re-produce, what you are paying for is the development of the software in the first place, and knowing the effort these guys go to it's no mean feat to do the development work. Also a generic chip is always going to be a compromise between cost and performance, if you want ultimate performance you have to go for a full RR setup.

Maybe not wrong, but perhaps compromised to meet the requirements for type approval. I think it helps to have a chip that accomodates the quirks of each specific engine, but even Mark's generic chip has better tractability and throttle response than the original as well as better economy. IMO that's the main reason for chipping - the power gains are small or zero in most cases.

A full remap is always going to be better - I agree with that.
When I had a lumpy cam in the Chimaera, the TVR Power chip helped to smooth out the lumpy progress below 2000rpm.
I paid a rolling road to do back to back tests on the standard chip and the TVR Power chip, and the latter leaned off a tad more at low rpm, and was a bit richer at higher rpm - handy for a lumpy cam.

Podie - I might be interested if this is still for sale - problems sending PH mail at the moment though - could you mail me with more details if its still available. Cheers.

YHM.

TVR power have a whole box of different fuel maps for different engine setups. The a chip is around £70, but its best selected with rolling road tests to get the best chip for your set up. The origional Lucas fuel map runs very lean above 4000 rpm,(as in Range rover fittment) so all the tuning chips add more fuel. Ive seen rolling road test results of the Tornado chip over the lucas fuel map and its good for about another 20 bhp, but Im sure TVR have already gone down this route as its easy horsepower. The chip itself is a 27128 EEPROM, only a few pence (if you can still get them) and dead easy to copy if you have the gear.

Does it all fit on a 27128 - mine's a 27256 byte-wide?
Without wishing to appear pedantic, it's not an EEPROM, it's an EPROM. They are still available and still widely used in all sorts of applications, but you won't get one for a few pence.
You are right, they are easy to copy with the proper equipment, but if anyone is planning this beware that copyright will exist in the bitmap, whether it be a standard TVR chip or otherwise. But recognising that people will attempt this, at least one programmer supplies his chips in an encrypted format: the chip is only any good with a decoder attached! That said, most copyright owners would allow you to make one copy for archive purposes.
Sorry my mistake about the(E)xEPROM. Im pretty sure mines a 27128,(we are talking 1992 computer chips here!)although the 27256 is plug compatable, you would only use half its available storage space and I dont know if any development work took place subsiquently on the ECU to make use of this. To modify the fueling You need the Lucas adaptor (fits into the wiring loom), laptop and the lucas software. You can then modify the fueling on the fly, and once happy with the results you load the modified fuel map into a new Eprom. The origional lucas Eprom has no facility to be reprogrammed,( it has no window to allow UV light to be used to eraise it) so it has to be cut out, and a socket fitted with a new chip. I payed for this work to be done to suit my engine from scratch, so I think I should own the copy right on this one!. BUT Before you ask...its not a TVR setup. Im intreged to know how the scambler chips work, as the ECU still has to read it as if it where the origional chip, so I dont see why an EPROM programmer could not read it. It may just be scare tatics by the chip suppliers, but Im open to suggestions. I have the relevent hardware to read the chips, but Im not going to pay silly money to get "encoded" chip just to see if I can read it.
