Apologies if this has been done before - I'm experiencing a very slow internet connection today so the search function isn't working for me.

I'm thinking of importing a kit from the states as it's about half the UK price. Does anyone have any experience of doing this as I obvioussly have to add the shipping, VAT, import duty etc.

Other issues that I can see are the problems of shipping a kit, rather than a complete car which can just be driven into and out of a container. There will also be some additional cost and effort in ensuring SVA compliance but I'm not too concerned about this.

Any advice much appreciated.

Shouldn't be too much trouble shipping a kit. Ive got mates who ship in motorbike spares in containers all the time so a Kit wouldn't be a problem.

What Kit you bringing in?

The plan is to get a Daytona. BA Daytonas in the UK can supply a fully SVA compliant Shell Valley kit from the US for about £23k plus VAT - total £27k. Shell Valley can provide the same kit, less the SVA bits and bobs, direct for $24k.

At today's rates that's less than £13k. Add UK import tax, VAT and shipping and you're still looking at less than £17k for the full kit less engine and box. With American customer service as it is it shouldn't be too difficult to persuade Shell Valley to source a nice V8 for me and stick it in the same shipping crate.

Understand what you're saying about motorbike bits but I've a feeling that a full kit would be a lot more awkward to package up for transport. Probably not too difficult in a shipping crate but then I've got to get it from the port at this end to my house. To be honest I haven't got a clue what's involved.

I believe PHer "Eric the Viking" has a business called something like 'Moving Parts' that specialises in shipping car parts from the US to the UK, might be worth having a chat with him. (He hangs out in the 'vette forum mainly).
