What is the blue pillar thing?
Discussion
Driving along recently I saw a succesion of pairs of blue pillars next to the road.
One pillar in each pair was tall and had what looked like a floodlight at the top. The other pillar was much shorter and looked a bit like a bollard, only dark blue.
Someone at work thinks these are cameras that time you over a distance, i.e. to the next pair of pillars. Someone else thinks they are just street lamps.
Does anyone recognise this discription?
I'm curious as what these things are!

Sounds like the TrafficMaster vehicle flow rate detectors. They do read parts of number plates and time vehicles over a distance but they're not average speed cameras. You can get small in-car receivers which warn of delays using signals from these, once free, from AA / RAC (maybe still so).
