Having just become the proud owner of a 97 Chim there are a few things that I would like to do to make it even more stunning - one of the jobs is to tidy up the rear lights. I want to clean up the sealant on the smoked lenses and replace the original square type lights with some sort of Lexus style rounded lights. 2 questions:

1. Is it true that the light units are mk3 Ford Fiesta direct replacements? Do any aftermarket Ford lights fit?

2. Is it practically possible to remove the old smoked lenses, remove the sealant, clean and refit? If so, what sealant should I use?

Any advice or web site links would be greatly appreciated.

They are Fiesta Mk3 lights - you can get a nice lexus style set on ebay for about £80 a pair but make sure you go for the black backed ones not the chrome ones - unless of course you like the chav effect...

Not sure about removing the perspex covers - havent got around to doing mine yet but as my covers are quite battered I will be replacing anyway with new. I recall seeing a thread recently where someone tried removing one and it cracked / broke. They are about £50 each to replace IIRC.

Thanks for the confirmation of the MK3S fitting.

Don't think I'll be 'chaving it up' would like to keep the retro style look, so will go for some understated black Lexus ones.

Easy to remove and replace the covers. Silkaflex or similar black sealant is fine. Neatness of finish will depend on skill with silkaflex...

Had to replace one of my light covers as a direct result of not applying the handbrake correctley whilst swapping places with my BM. Thats another story, not so embarrassing as when it happened.

The hardest thing is cleaning the old sealant away. Once this is done take your time and mask up at both sides of the sealant line. The more time spent here the better. Apply the sealant, let set for a while. Then after about 20 mins carefully remove the masking tape.

My cover cost £20 secondhand from the breakers.

Blimey thats cheap! I was close to starting a thread exactly the same for a 97 Chimaera I am about to collect - best start watching ebay I guess.
