The free webspace I've been using for years has done two things deserving of being abandoned. First it no longer allows hot-linking, but more worryingly it serves up more intrusive adverts than ever before.

What are people's experiences of free hosting like? Its a struggle to see any these days that allow ftp access, hotlinking and all the other things I'd like to play around with on web-pages. As usual, someone realised they could make money out of it and now everyone follows suit. (remember when paying for a mobile ringtone was unheard off?!)

www.freenetname.co.uk great
now owned by madasafish

I used them for years... perfect for basic hosting... 100mb and free domain

no longer use them as my site is well over 200mb now, but if it wasn't... i'd still be there

edit:strictly only free when you have their dailup, to upload stuff onto the web, I had that in the days of dailup then used the justmail account type when i got bt broadband. not bad for 2.50 a month ish. which is probably what you'd spend using dialup checking your email and updating a site in a month easily

You pay for what you get in the web hosting business I'm affraid. I can't think of a single free hosting service that I'd be happy recommended to even my worst enemy I'm affraid. Being fair I've never actually encountered a Geocities like place that offered the usual buffet of services you get as standard (i.e. PHP, MySQL, Shell, SSL, FTP) but they have been increasing the amount of adverts they display and their size over the years.

Having said that often your ISP will give you some basic web space as a freebie with your account, this often allows hotlinking and will probably have FTP access to it. But it's again probably going to be pretty basic (no SQL/PHP/etc).

On the other hand if your happy to pay a bit for the good stuff then well... cast your gaze upwards lol.

You only get what you pay for

Couldn't agree more! But it doesn't stop me attempting to be cheap

The other problem with the ISP provided space not mentioned above is that once a year it'll get changed. Same reason I use hotmail/gmail instead of the ISP provided email addresses (and after a bitter job departure, no longer use work email for personal stuff).
In terms of what it'll be used for, 3/4 of the time it'll be for sharing some photos. Hard to justify paying for that when it could be free with a flickr type site. The other 1/4 however is just me wanting to play in space time and keep my html/etc skills honed.

It should be 200+ given the amount of PH clients I actually have, but alas not everyone clicks the links..
