Any local "Cherry Bomb" fans?
Discussion
Hi,
I am seriously considering having the Cherry Bomb exhaust conversion, but would really like to hear one on a Chim first hand before making the committment. I live in Berks between M4 J10 and M3 J4 - anyone local that could help me out?
Also, has anyone had it done and then found it so loud that they have changed back again?
Thanks for your help
David
P.S.
Ian Miller (PHer IM) what did you have done to yours? IIRC it was very loud in the tunnels

Which cherrybomb system, just out of interest? They do sound different.
That's a great question, highlighting my ignorance. I didn't know that there were variations.
I have been reading some old posts extolling the aural virtues of the "Cherry Bomb Exhaust", and i thought i should have some! - It seems that Austec and others fit them...
what are the options? :feelingfoolishsmiley:

If your main cat is present, it's not at all OTT
I Guess everyone's opinion varies - my main cat remains (no pre-cats), yet I feel mine is OTT. Don't get me wrong - I love it for a hoon, but I am very wary of upsetting my neighbours and never leave the car to warm up. Also any regular motorway commuting would get very tiring within days - it is SO loud at motorway speeds. Happily I go to work via back roads and I love it, but don't be fooled into thinking the main cat will keep things reasonable. Oh BTW, the pops and bangs on the overrun
sounds like war is coming

Hi David I had the Austec Racing "Straight-through" conversion.
Silencer cut open.
2 perforated pipes inside were cut out.
2 non-perforated pipes were welded in.
Wading was discarded.
£165 2 months ago.
Since then I've had the Pre-Cats removed whilst they (Austec) were replacing the manifold gaskets.
The Gasket/pre-cat removal was £560 but I cant split out the pre-cat part of that.
Regardless, the "Straight-through" conversion was what you heard...and at only £165 it's a MUST-DO!
See ya soon.
PS. I copied something from you which you'll see next time we meet, so feel free to copy my exhaust conversion

Actually the Demonstrator Griff is my car. There's a vid of it somewhere. The ACT system is a total replacement system as opposed to a cut'n' shut conversion.
I know Hoover has a cherrybomb system on his Pre Cat and in his own words "sounds more agricultral" than mine.

You can't split it out as to get at the pre-cats you have to have remove the manifolds to get at them, which is where the fat of the labour is.
Agree that if you're not going down the ACT complete system route, then the more affordable 'mod' is the way to go

Hi Ian, many thanks for the info, hope you are keeping well. In reading through the posts, i'm favouring the mod which seems to be similar to what you had done, but with the Chery Bomb pipes inserted instead of the non-perf pipe, and they keep the wadding in. Did you consider this at all? Apparantly produces a "deeper" tone, that isn't too loud to prevent happy motorway trips. IM said:

Are you referring to my "little" one at the front i wonder
You planning to be at the run on the 30th Sept?

Thanks Pupp, not planning on removing the Main cat (i'm a little too old for the consequences!)

Have it done you wont regret it'ibought my first 450 in feb this year since then ive had the cat removed and had new decatted manifolds and to finish off 2 lovley cherrybombs and a mark adams super chip. SOUNDS AWSOME and still manage to get18/19 to the gallon.......
Wow Jonka, see my response to Pupp, although i'd like to hear it sometime, i probably couldn;t live with it.
Thanks for the replies guys, still hoping i can meet someone local who has had the job done
Been thinking about exhaust sleaving/cherry bomb for a long time....and then one appeared in the classifieds "Offords Cherry Bomb" comlete exhaust. A quick 340mile round trip and a bit of beer money for my local tyre/exhaust fitter and I can honestly say its the best money I've spent in a long time, sounds fantastic but despite my fears really isn't that much louder on motorways (well, inside the car anyway

Yes I did consider this as I had heard a friends 'Cherry-bombed' exhaust. To be honest I didn't consider it to be worth the extra £££'s involved for a difference I couldn't discern. The mod I have is certainly "deep" enough for me - any deeper and it would grow a beard - and DOESN'T prevent happy motorway driving - but that's a subjective opinion. Horses for courses/One mans meat...etc.
HOWEVER...If your at all shy or the retiring type DONT DO IT. You WILL be looked at by almost everyone on the pavement as you pass by or sit waiting for the lights to change etc. My wife hates it as it draws so much attention and she feels its OTT.

No...actually it has more to do with your back end...if you'll pardon the expression

Hey Chris, Tim sent me the vid of your car sounds great although cannot get a real feel for how much different the sound is from a normal Griff, how is the sound when you are doing a decent speed?
Hmmm... my car was pretty loud to start with, being a Pre Cat, but as the compression Ratio was dropped it had a slightly different sound. But compared to the old sound:
At low revs sounds more crisp, you can hear the beat of the engine more, more of a burble. When you rev it you get a crackle. It's quite civilised up to around 3000rpm. At 3500-600 you get a peak in the noise, around 4 and it sounds like the car used to, except with more crackle and a clearer tone and a slight increase in volume.
The majority of the chage in sound is under the 4000rpm mark. I am very happy with the system, and if you are thinking about changing your system and you want Cherry Bombs then I can definitely reccomend it. As it has been pointed out, it is a full system rather than just a silencer replacement.
I have some pics of both the standard system (Griff) and the new one side by side when I fitted them if anyone is interesed?
Jonathan I see you are in London, I'm in Croydon, if you fancy hearing the system give me a shout, I'm sure we can hook up.
