I recently let my bro drive my Chim for the first time, during which I realised that the passenger seat is actually lower than the drivers. I could tell because I had to raise my elbow more to rest on the door than on my usual side. I'm guessing that a previous owner has raised the driver's seat at some point. I'm 6'3" so would like to lower my seat - is this an easy job for a mechanical-donut like myself?

Very easy. Working from under the car, there are 4 nuts directly below the seat, undo these, hold the seat, move it to/fro slightly, and it should just lift out. Obviously be careful as there's not much room when removing the seat, don't want to damage anything !, also, better doing this with the roof panel out, rear screen down, it just gives you a bit more room. Putting it back is just the reverse, can be a bit fiddly locating the bolts through the floor pan holes, and you may need to wedge a screwdriver or something alongside the bolt, where the bolt goes through the seat frame, then just tighten up, and bingo !.

Don't forget a wee bit of silicon around each washer as well.

Oh, so it's normal? Why's that? Am I therefore unlikely to be able to lower it?

What he said.

Make sure water can't find it's way up into the interior after you put it all back together.

When you've taken it out check the wires under the seat which hold the foam in place, mine had rusted away and the seat cushion had sagged. I replaced with long cable ties and have a comfortable seat again.

Don't the seats have blocks which can be removed to give more headroom?

I'm 6'5" and some more space would be good- how can I tell if the blocks are there?

Mine has spacing blocks at the front on the driver's side. However, the bolthole for fixing the block to the floor does not line up with the hole on the seat frame (about 50mm different IIRC). Therefore if you discard the spacing blocks you will need to drill some new floor holes and seal up the old ones, or drill new holes in the frame runners.

That's what the mechanic said about mine - it had been raised at the front of the drivers side. Perhaps it's not an after market mod after all....

As far as I know, the passenger seat is lower as standard, and the driver's seat is raised slightly.
