Replacement rear speakers?

My 96 4.2 has still got the original style set up with a single 6x9 in the centre, 2 tweeters in the doors and 2 in the c-pillars.

Thought I would update the horrendously cheap ones in the c-pillar and got my tape measure out. Blow me but they appear to be 3.5" (or 8cm in new money) which may have been popular in 1996 but seems to be redundant in 2006. Actually I'll qualify that - redundant apart from being used in the dash of Mondeo's and Citroens etc. It appears that I cannot find a better quality replacement that has:
a) 4 lugs for screwing into the c-pillar, as most now only have 2 lugs.
b) A grille cover

Has anyone changed these ones for something with more musical qualities?

Talk to Carl Baker (details on www.tvr-uk.tv). He fitted MB quarts to my Cerb and the sound quality is excellent.

My car had the same setup as yours. I had the same problem you are having, and in the end I simply binned the rear speakers in favour of some excellent 16.5cm door components driven by an amp and a 10" sub, again driven by an amp. The result is excellent sound quality, without the need for the rears. I think the standard speaker wire is marginal too, so better speakers will struggle for power using the standard wires. Rewiring the door speakers is relatively simply though.

I've kept the standard speakers in the rear, but replaced the front ones with MB Quartz'and 2 tweeters, massive improvement.

Main problem I had waas clearance between the grille and the seat belt mount although you may not have problems with 3.5" speakers.

I thought the speakers were 4" rear, and 6.5" front?

Now I'm confused. This is another of those small improvements I want to make.

I remember the size is an odd one, and not very common at all these days. Plus the depth is minimal, so you won't get good speakers in there anyway unless you make custom mounts to space them out a bit.

Ok, has anyone got any links to speakers that are a direct replacent for the standard Pioneers, but better? I don't particularly want to go the whole Ice install/Sub in the helmet hole route.

Ahhh rubbish.

Could you not use your old grilles?

For my 4" speakers the replacment grilles were too large so I took the new grilles and mounted them into the orginal Pioneer grille holders. That way I had the clearance to fit them between the seatbelt mount.
