WMP 10 - not finding hardware - run out of answers ...HELP!
Discussion
So, I bought Mrs Kentish an MP3 player and we updated the current version of windows media player 9 to WMP10 with the CD supplied with the MP3 and the software didn't recognise the MP3 was plugged in. We had plugged it in prior to the WMP10 update to charge it up and it did recognise the MP3 at that time. We deleted WMP10 and re-installed from the MS windows website (this is using XP o/s BTW), no difference!
We made sure we deleted all files and tried a re-install of WMP10 again and still no change. No drivers are required that are not integral to WMP10.
We took the MP3 to the in-laws and installed WMP10 from the Web on their PC and it all worked fine, same connection lead same player etc.
All I can guess is that by plugging the MP3 in to charge it up and make sure it worked prior to installing WMP10 must have messed something up. Because WMP10 is a windows standard component of the XP o/s, we are unable to use the install/uninstall tool.
So, we used the windows rollback to take the PC back to the state prior to when we had plugged the MP3 in initially to charge and we then tried to re-install WMP10 from the disc again and there was no change, we rolled back again and did the same update from the Web and no difference, again.
Damned if I know what else we can do now, we can't keep going to the in-laws to upload and delete files - there must be a way to resolve the problem.
Any ideas?

Stupid question: Tried a different USB port?
No, that's a good question!
Yes we did try both ports and same problem, they're both the required USB2 so should be OK.
Hmm... plug something else in to those ports (mouse, keyboard... the cat) anything happen?
If Windows XP isn't even picking up the device (i.e. USB mass storeage driver isn't kicking in) I'm leaning on those ports being dead or blown...
Thanks for replies folks.
USB ports are both operating, it's a fairly new lap top too and a multi USB works and so does a mouse in the other so they both appear to be fine.
BTW, I'm plugging MP3 directly into port and not using the multi USB in case that was the problem.
I'll give the unistall windows component a go but I'm sure there was an option for WMP10.
I need to have a look again as I've been working away for a week and not been playing about with it since last saturday.
