Good online payment systems – NOT paypal!
Discussion
I'm getting a lot of customers buying but moaning about problems with paypal, or even worse people who are reluctant to buy anything purely because they'd have to go through paypal!
I currently have a 'merchant' account where folks can pay using a credit card (without setting up a paypal account), but am looking for a better (and cheaper for me!) system.
Any recommendations?

I recently had a problem with PAYPAL. I was trying to buy something expensive (Hi Fi)over the web. I entered my details into the form and as soon as I put my email address in a PAYPAL dialogue popped up. I do have a PAYPAL account but the money for the purchase was in a different account than the one PAYPAL debits. Once the site had "discovered" my PAYPAL account it would not let me pay any other way. I was so pissed off I cancelled the transaction and complained to PAYPAL. Their reaction went something like "this is the way we work, whats wrong with that?".
I eventually made the purchase, using the phone and a cheque book.
I would say that you are probably right to look for an alternative.

I can recommend doing some more research here www.electronic-payments.co.uk/. This has a tool that shows who is the cheapest overall.
The last time I checked Paypal were the cheapest. If you want the prestige and convenience of a traditional online payments system then you'll have to pay for it.
