me and my old man are getting a DSLR soon, hes decided he wants to stick with canon after all his past camera experiance, but we cant decide which one is ideal for us. 30d was the one but with the recent annoucement of the 400d its just confused matters. if somebody could just clear up why the 30d is the price it is? is worth the extra over the 400d or even the 350d.

Many thanks.

Happy to help, but need your requirements first.

The pricey Canon is better, but the cooking 350 will do well for 90 percent of most people's requirements. Both take the lens range.

I need light weight and compactness over lens swapping, so have an all-in-one Minolta A200 for travel, which is excellent.

30D is larger, better to hold for some.

It also has a better viewfinder, better controls, 5fps shooting & a much more mechanicaly solid shutter/mirror system good for twice the shots the 350/400d is. More solid body too. ISO 3200 & SPOT meetering. its still at a technical advantage to the 400d in most aspects. Also has a monochrome LCD on the top for settings and displays the ISO.

No sensor cleaning (that'll be the 40d I guess).
