Quick Question , Have Full UK licence ( old paper version pink ) with secondary international driving licence.

Now if I move full time to Europe what happens to my UK drivers licence ? do i need to sit a test apply for a licence in that particular country ? ( example change of address)

Secondly girlfriend has Russian drivers licence , is this valid in the UK? or does she need to sit a test in UK / Europe etc.? and therefore Insurance would be affected

thanks

Faster reply.

If EEC Country and is falling in line with EEC Directive then UK Licence, whilst valid, covers in that Country for Groups stated. Other then EEC Country one should check to see if it is OK with the Transport Authority of that Country.

Re Russian Licence, providing it is valid, allows driving of small vehicles in UK for up to one year from date of entry to country after which time one should have obtained a Prov D/L and test.

I would suggest that she apply for a driving test as soon as poss and turn up without L plates. The examiner will question absence of L plates etc and will find himself in the ridiculous position, that the examinee can drive off after the test regardless of the outcome.

Identical for me (many years ago, in the Netherlands with UK license).

The protocol was something like:
- tourist, or stay shorter than 6 months or 1 year (can't remember which), no action required
- if you intend to stay in the country for longer that [that period], you are required to "swap" your uk licence for a Dutch one (in those days I had an old green uk one, and got it replaced by a shiny pink Dutch one, with photo, wow ). All categories were also faithfully transferred - I had a uk car and motorbike licence, so my Dutch one had that too. No tests, no questions, just an administrative charge (of course!).

My Sister lives in Italy but took her test in the UK, she was 'issued' with an Italian licence and got to keep her UK one, On the other hand I took my test in Italy and got a UK licence in exchange but had to 'surrender' the Italian one, who says the laws are equal? confused ....

you dont have to swap your Uk (photo) driving licence for a local one anymore within the EU. maybe different if you have the old paper UK Licence but the new photo one is certainly ok. probably worth upgrading your UK driving licence to a photo one and just using that
