windows/dos file view in ascii and hex
Discussion
Hi, All
there is an application in dos/windows command prompt
that allows you to display a text file, showing the ascii and the related hex
I cant for the life of be remember the name of it, and i need to find some control chacters i've got comming from a unix file...
I thought it was debug, but if it is i cant remember how to use it
anyone
cheers
Graham
It used to be Debug though I don't know if this is included in the latest DOS command prompt. You need to use IIRC "D" and the lines you want displayed e.g D100-1000 to display the lines of code 100 to 1000. The last time I used it was to hack the number of credits I had in Elite so its been awhile since I've used it (Dos 3.1)
debug still exists - I still use it a lot to take a quick look at hex data in files.
Note if the file you want to look at is an executable (.exe or .com extension) it will process it through the loader and fix up any relocations, strip the header out etc so it will not appear in memory as it does on disk. In this case simply copy the file from foo.exe to foo.tmp or something then load foo.tmp

I use www.belkaplan.de/opera/tools/xvi32.htm to view and edit binarys.
