I've now had the S1 back 2 weeks since the Engine rebuild and have reached the 500 mile mark for the first oil change.
I have just taken it for a run to warm up the oil ready for draining.
After going only 3 miles I could smell the engine was getting very hot with fumes rising.
The temp gauge had still not got to the norm of just a bit past 90 and was showing approx 70.
Of course I stopped immediately lifted the bonnet and yes the engine was very hot. The water wasn't boiling.
I waited for things to cool down and eased my way back home with the fan override on, by which time it was very hot again although the water temp was at normal.
The only other problem I had before this, is water pumping out the overflow which I put down to me filling the swirl to the top instead of leaving 2-3inches of air.
This was happening on yesterdays run and agan I put it down to air lock clearing although it was puming water out through the overflow and the temp rose a bit higher than normal but not in the red.
Yesteray when I got home I checked and there were no leaks and the fanbelt was tight.
AS well as a full rebuild I have also had the rad recored so there shoud be no problems there.
I can only think it is a jammed thermostat.
This of course will be new along with the hoses and caps.
Obviously I will be ringing the garage on Monday Morn but does anyone have any theories.

A friend of mine had a similar problem. Found out that the water wasn't circulating around the engine block because (forgive my lack of technical terms here), having had a new rad fitted, the mechanic had put the pressure / realease valve?? around the wrong way thereby stopping the water getting to the engine. Basically, although the temp gauge was saying that the engine hadn't warmed up, it was hotter than the pits of hell.

Hope this is useful

I've since had a word with the garage who confirm a new thermostat was fitted. They told me it most likely needed amother bleed. This I did and undoing the bleed vcalve at the top of the rad with ththe swirl cap off a long stream of air came outof the rad.
I will keep checking this on a regular basis for the next few hundred miles. They also confirmed the water pump had been checked out as having plenty of life left in it.

Thanks for the suggestion I will get the bible out and find out where it is. I doubt it was the cause in my case as I have done nearly 500 miles before I had any trouble.

After bleeding, the problem is sorted but repeated bleeding is still needed to get more airlocks out.
When I park water is still coming out the overflow.
Hopefully the problem will get better with regular bleeding getting rid of the airlocks.
