Attitudes to speed, cameras and trafpol
Discussion
A selection of results from a certain motoring publication survey.

Speed cameras do very badly indeed, the push for a higher m-way limit continues, while trafpol are generally respected and more wanted.

58% want 80mph limit on the motorway
21% want 90mph
09% want 100mph
11% want to keep 70mph
72% want 20mph limits outside schools
Speed Cameras
73% want fewer speed cameras
81% want more vehicle activated signals
19% say speed cameras make them safer drivers
81% say speed cameras don't make them safer drivers
59% said police should spend their time chasing 'real' criminals
Attitude to Police
60-62% want more trafpol (two related questions)
83% say there's too much reliance on speed cameras
45% have less respect for the police than they used to
66% say police do a good job and deserve support

35% Yes

Should be of use when posts claim to know what drivers want.

How many people were surveyed, and how were they chosen? It's what we want to hear, but the results *may* be meaningless.
Of course they're meaningless 'cos no-one will take any notice of them anyway.
Of course, their wrong answers are about right.

There you go then, what politician is going to listen to a load of people who actually take an interest in motoring? I'd imagine that this will get dismissed as nonsense as per Paul Smiths interview with Ladyboy. I think the perception will be that car mags and sites such as PH and even SafeSpeed only have one basic intention, that being to drive as fast as you like without any regard for speed limits, sad but true.

Not drivers, the population, everyone has a stake in it.
The only roads where we don't have other road users is motorways.
For what it's worth regards the bullet points.
I have no problem with an 80 limit on motorways personally, only I'd like to see it as part of a variable motorway limit.
I have no problem with less cameras, only I'd like to see more trafpol if we are going to have less cameras (not less cameras & less OR no more trafpol).

First off what hypocrisy is this? When issues, like the London COngestion Charge, which affect everybody are being "consulted on" a large proportion of the people who it affects i.e. those outside London, have no voice. Then there's the fact that more than 80% of the population own or have access to a car, the precise figure from the last census escapes me. So, does democracy at work Livingstone stylee mean the 20% can stfu ?

That was quick, the quote after mine confirms the dismissal of the results, as expected, without any real reasoning.
Who dismissed them ?
I merely pointed out that I think the views of all are important, not just drivers.
As for the results,
I said, I'll have an 80 limit (with a proviso)& I'm for less cameras (with a proviso).
So depending how the questions were actually phrased I may have voted for those responses myself.

if there was a speed limit for verification of a post's prediction, vh would get a ticket for that

Ok fair enough perhaps it just appeared that way after you'd immediately stepped in with that comment, apologies
Besides, I would imagine non drivers will be in minority and so therefore you could perhaps assume that under a democratic process their vote (if they cared to vote) be over ruled by the masses.JoolzB said:

Yes, imagine democracy at work.....because in Bliar's Britian you need a bl00dy good imagination
First post here....
Whilst we have to suffer unrealisticly low speed limits, I'd say,
Cameras are good as you can easily avoid being caught by simply slowing down when your road angel tells you to. The only exception to this rule are the specs cameras. I had the misfortune to travel up the M1 the other day through the roadworks through a specs regulated section, it must have been almost 10 miles of mind numbing 40mph. If that doesn't cause people to either fall asleep and crash or crash as a result of staring at their speedo's, I don't know what does. What happened to 50mph or 60mph in roadworks on a motorway? Protecting the workforce, don't think so, there was no workforce. It simply made people bunch up making the likliehood of an accident more real. It would seem that motorway roadwork speed limits are dropping by 10mph every 10 years or so, soon no doubt it will be 30.
Trafpol are bad as you never know where they are, however I think and hope most would agree that some speed limits are totally unjustified and set far to low. We must not forget however that they have to deal with the consequences when it all goes wrong where people get killed, that must taint their attitude somewhat. It is alright for us whizzing along for the most part not having had to deal with a fatal crash, but if we did, I'm sure some of the blase attitude on here would tone down.
The law; nothing wrong with it. It is the speed limits that are wrong. I also believe that undertaking be made legal as it would certainly make the middle lane donkies wake up a bit.
As for speed, nothing wrong with it if used in the right place. Recently in the news there have been two notable fatal accidents, both involving whole families, one on the M25 and one on the A34. Both caused by HGV's ploughing into cars, both accidents involving children. Tell me they were caused by speed, no, more likely HGV drivers who were bored out of their brains at being stuck at 56mph or probably less. The net result is two families gone and god knows how they must have suffered, you can only hope it was quick. It is very unlikely that speed was a contributing factor in my opinion.
On a lighter note... what is it with people who flash their lights at you for overtaking? Should we jolly well tow the line and do 40mph everywhere like they do, including 40mph where they should be doing less?
Nice site, nice forum.
