Windows XP has a built-in Files & Settings transfer wizard which seems to be able to copy the user profiles, file associations and the My Documents folder+subs.

Altneratives are:
Back up everything to CD/DVD/USB-key, copy it back on to new machine.
Rip old machine's HDD out and put it in a USB caddy thing. Copy it accross and keep old drive as somewhere to backup to.
If the two machines are on a network, set up a file share on the old machine and pull stuff that way.

Hi Sarah.

My old pc is windows ME. Is this a problem with what You have said?

Added to say...If i've got some virus/spy crap on my files at the moment, does this mean it will transfer across too?

Yup and yup, potentially.

Personally I would burn the files you need on the old machine to CD/DVD (if you can), and virus/spyware scan them before copying them to the new machine, there are 2 benefits, one its more difficult for them to infect your new machine and 2 you have a backup for future use.
