Th revs on my car decrease very slowly back down to idle.I've been told by this forum that it is due to the stepper motor needing cleaning. Where do I locate the stepper motor and how do I clean it?

It depends what you mean by slowly. It's supposed to reduce to tickover slowly. Stepper motor problems usually take the form of high or low final tickover revs.

There's a good description of how to do this here, but it is more a cure for 'erratic' tickover I think.

You just need to remember that the body of the stepper motor is plastic so be careful when unscrewing and tightening as it can crack. I cleaned mine with a bit of Autosol metal polish - brought it up a shiny treat. I also used a bit of PTFE tape for a good seal without the need to 'overtighten'.

The car idles at about 2000 revs and very slowly, over about a minute or so reduces back down.

Get it idling steadily at the right speed, disconnect the stepper motor. If the problem goes away it's a stepper motor/wiring/speed sensor/ECU problem. If it remains, you have an air leak, sticking throttle or other problem of that sort.
