The clip of the next episode about or obsession with speed, well I think my friends Mk1 is in it. He filmed for a day with the BBC about 6 weeks ago, I know it's due to be screened soon, but not sure whether it's this programme, or the Wrong Car Right Car one.
It's a black Mk1, v.v.v.low, with polished porsche rims (though he recently sold them), and a G60 engine (s/charged 8v). Gorgeous car, prob my all time favourite Mk1.

Why do they need to do this though? If they bin road tax and add whatever they want to fuel are they not getting the same deal. In fact it's better for them cos they can fiddle the figures, it's what joe public have been suggesting all along and it'll save the cost of building a 'spy system'..........ooooh I geddit, they want a spy system

I quite enjoyed it, especially the second half looking at the rise of direct action and road protest. Begg's views a bit biased and some of his ideas border on Big Brother (not the TV programme) but he is right that more roads will not solve the problem, this was worked out years ago.
I was involved with the protests at Twyford and Newbury and whilst being a self confessed car nut back then what happened with the building of those roads was a disgrace. Have either of them reduced traffic - I don't think so and I don't really care. I would have happily sat an extra half hour in a traffic jam to save Twyford, that was a beautiful place...
What are people's ideas. We all disagree with current plans to reduce congestion, which is needed, so how can you do it?

Much as I'm a car fan, I also don't like to see badly planned roads built with little regard for the landscape they pass through - often built to the cheapest contract with crap materials. I'd much prefer to drive on a decent A/B road than a boring motorway. They should have kept and developed all the railways and integrated transport system we had in the past instead of making road transport the only option.

I tried to investigate it through some research, I was at uni in Southampton at the time, but I was kind of put off... Nothing sinister I just could not get anyone to speak. I had hoped that with the change in government there would be a shift in policy, but it does not seem to have happened...

Begg is a dangerous political anti-car fanatic whose opinions much to my concern seem to be popping up all over the place. Given time the majority "Ignorati" will soon be spouting his bile, verbatim, as the "accepted" thinking on these matters.
He is not right about more roads not solving the problem (More roads can go part of the way to solving the problem). Putting things simply our increased use of roads is caused by our economic growth. We should have been increasing the road infrastrucutre in line with economic developement, successive governments however have deliberately failed to do this for political reasons, IMHO to the very great detriment of our economy.
