Starter Motor ???

Help needed please.
Took the Cerb out tonight, (went for a meal) started the car no trouble after the meal, usual cold car noises, but once the engine warmed up we noticed a new rattle, not heard it before seemed to be coming from the middle front.
MOH decided to stop the car, (luckily on a hill) tried to turn the car over and nothing except a whirring noise, I wasn't impressed as this was 11.30 at night and thought I was going to be walking home (shoes not for walking). Thankfully Trev bump started no problem.
Booked on a drive for BNG next weekend, and its bank holiday monday, any ideas on what it may be, MOH thinks its the starter motor come loose? Anyone know where it is and could we solve this ourselves, he's not scared of getting his hands mucky. Had the starter motor re-conditioned twice in the last year, last time was at the service 6 weeks ago.
Don't want to miss the BNG again, missed it last year due to the power steering. Will be ringing our Indie on Tues but not holding out much hope for a fix before next weekend if relying on a garage.

Just picked the starter up from Paul, and what can I say but what a top bloke to get us out of a sticky situation before BNG. Cars in the garage tomorrow to have it replaced so its a weekend out in the car for us.
Yes it seemed to stay engaged and for whatever reason there is some white glue at the rear of the starter. Will find the full story in a few days time as to why its gone again.
