My 94 4.0l let me down for the first time in 4 1/2 years last night.

Driving into Manch and lost all power and the engine stopped, coasted to side of road and stopped. Engine would spin ok but not fire. Checked all leads etc but nothing. Then tried to start again and she fired for a bit but then died. I then realised that when I turned ignition on I couldn't hear the fuel pump. Pulled the ECU out from footwell and when i turned the ignition i could hear/feel a click from the relay on the black connecter but nothing from the other.

My diagnosis is the fuel pump relay may have gone as looking at the colour size of the leads to the black connector this is the ignition relay.

It then took 3 1/2 hours for AA to recover me home on a flat bed. Not the best sat night I've ever had.

Can any of you experienced guys help? Is it the relay? Any other ideas, i've tried searching the forum but it just seems to lock the computer, are their any threads you can provide a link to?

Thanks

Hi,
2 identicle silver coloured relays in wiring loom to ECU, one fuel pump the other ECU main power relay. Both should click on when ignition turned on the fuel pump relay should click off after a few seconds. Think the ignition relay is in the main fuse board. May be worth taking out the silver relays cleaning all contacts and making sure they are a good fit. Common fault I think and lots of past threads to look at when search is back up and working.

It may be worth checking the spade connector on the fuel pump itself. This can be found behind the rear nearside wheel. Mine came loose and produced very similar symptoms.

i had the same problem last week, i could hear one relay clicking but not the other, i swaped them over and still the other one would not click, i took it to my local auto spares and they couldn't match it, i ended up going to an auto electrics, he checked it and it was buggered. he repaired it there and then, took him about 30mins and cost me £3. worked great ever since. spin

Every time I went over a bump the car cut out, the fuel pump wiring was shorting on the rear suspension.

its worth cutting the original terminals off at the pump end of the loom,re/crimp some new one on and cover in vaseoline or silicone grease available from maplins.the copper goes brittle on the old one when you try to close them up they collapse just a point worth mentioning.

Thanks guys, pretty sure its the relay, just ordered one from Bosch, should be picking it up in an hour, hopefully it will be that. If not it will mean jacking her up in th p***ing rain and getting underneath and looking at fuel pump. Supposed to driving to Eastbpurne from Manch on Thurs so need to get this sorted.

Thanks for all suggestions so far. Will keep you posted.

Sorted, new relay, Bosch 0332014112, £16.16 inc VAT and she works fine. Just need to get her up to temp and reset the ECU as had to take battery out to charge up after having hazards on for nearly 4 hours.

Will be getting underneath this pm to sort out the Speedo sensor so will check pump connectors then and replace if necessary.

Thaks again for all the help.

What he said I broke down (third time in six weeks ffs) on the way home from the garage after it having the fuel pump bypass operation, and the same thing happened - engine died and I rolled to a stop on a hill blocking someones driveway (argh!). Engine would turn over and would 'stutter' a little on occasion (especially when left for a few minutes).
Turned out the spade connector had come loose. Quick and easy 10 minute fix, on ramps.

I've been reading through these old threads with a similar problem.
I don't want to depress you to much,......
I used to work for a motor factor and these Genuine Bosch relays should retail for around £6.50+vat with my staff discount i got both (the same part number for both) for way less than £10

Also i've seen
the headlight lenses for as much as £48+vat each down to £26+vat each
TVR fitted a Landrover oil filter £13+vat, reputable filter manufacturer £6-£7+vat
TVR fitted 8 NGK sparkplugs at £4+vat each (£37.60 total), NGK via motorfactor £2.50-£3.00+vat each (£28.80 total)
Just be aware there are considerable price variations out there.
