Is there one available? Hopefully costing at least half the price of the originals?

I feel a little silly now

Thanks for the links though. Can anyone offer an opinions on the quality of each replica? Any specific things to look out for?

First time building a kit car, reasonable mechanical knowledge but terrible at bodywork!

How much are you thinking of spending??......scratchchin

Somewhere between £10K for a Sierra based bare bones Sumo to £25K+ for a nice Dax/GD/AK etc. and then £75K for a Kirkham.

£10k sounds good to me!

I'm looking at cobraclub now, but can anyone give me a quick spoon-feed? Are all the chassis' pretty much similar as it seems most of the looks are the same (to my untrained eye) and i'm mainly interested in blasting it round some good country roads rather than outright power etc

Edited to add: must be rwd though

Think most of the front wheel drive Cobras have been phased out by now

Hi Sean.

Don't forget the earlier comment that you should add 25% to your initial estimate!

I think that you will only see many of the differences in the quality of the cars when you actually get up close and see them in the flesh.

There are plenty of PH'ers who will give you as much info as you need. Dave is extremely knowledgeable about certain makes of Cobra Replica (You'll guess from his PH name that he specialises in DAX!) and he does build some extremely nice cars.

Once you have listened to all the advice both here, and on CobraClub, the best advice is to get yourself to one of the kit car shows, and have a good look around. 99% of owners will happily give you the guided tour of their cars, and will probably point out any issues or pitfalls as well as the good stuff.

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago.... but the management (wife!) decided that a Fake Snake was not for us(!)

Good luck with the hunt!

You'd be hard pressed to find a FWD one!

To be honest I don't think you will get a great car for 10k, maybe a half decent 4 cylinder Ford Pinto powered Sumo or similar...scratchchin

Up it to 15 or 20k though, and you are getting into Dax or GD territory....driving

V8 power is definitely the way to go though.....cloud9

You know...I could come up with a thousand excuses as to why I said that...but I think I will stop digging right here...

£10K is going to be a seriously budget build (looks and all). Unless you really, really MUST build it yourself there are some awesome cobra bargains about at the moment - the prices seem to have hit the floor.

Although not as desirable as Yank V8 there's a V12 Dax I've seen around for £10K at the moment and plenty of Rover V8 based Sumos at that money which you couldn't match for your £10k build. Remember that 25% mentioned above - a set of halibrand replicas will set you back a grand to start with!

There's still plenty of fun to be had upgrading and customising a car that's already built and they all need something doing to them so you'll be straight in spanner wielding

Well I spent many hours last night looking into it a bit more, but no-one seems to say definitively which replica is the best in terms of looks and ease to build?

I definitely don't mind a bargain, even better if its built already

When I say £10k as a budget, I'm thinking of how much I can afford as the initial outlay but of course I can spend more to slowly upgrade it i.e. leather dash etc

Also the engine is not really that important right now (as long as its decent), but I do need a chassis with the potential later to drop in a big V8 or something, any recommendations on which kits offer this flexibility?

If you want to upgrade later with V8 then a Jag based kit is a must.
But to be honest start with a V8 in the first place its not that different, bog standard, fully rebuilt Chevy's are available for just under £3K.which will give you 250bhp out of the box.
Look to AK for one of the better kits and customer service around at the moment, also try Madgwicks SRV8, links to both on the cobra site.
But as said above, there are some very good examples around for sale in the £15K bracket, and you would be very hard pushed to build one for that, and as also said you will then tinker with it to make it to your own taste and style.

Thank you, exactly what I needed to know.

Thing with the engine is that i'm still only 22 and I suspect 300bhp+ for insurance purposes will be costly! Will look into it more though, cheers.
