Download speeds

Has anyone got any idea as to why my downloads start off at around about 300kb per sec then rapidly decrease to around 100 kb per sec as the download progresses? I'm using a BT Voyager wireless modem with a dell inspiron 6000 laptop, the connection icon always tells me that the connection speed is 54mbps and the signal strength is excellent.

The download starts while the dialogue box asking you weather to save/open or whatever, but the timer doesnt start counting untill you finish that box. So when it calculates average download speed it starts off with a load of stuff downloaded in zero time, so the average speed starts off impossibly high then quickly falls to the correct level. How fast is your internet connection supposed to be, 1 meg?

Thanks Aldi, that makes sense and yes my connection is supposed to be 1 meg.
