Grinding from power steering

Is this normal? I picked the car up on friday so I'm not used to which noises are normal and which arn't. The steering is smooth and feels properly weighted but there is a slight grinding noise that isn't related to the turning of the wheel. i.e. if you keep the wheel at a constant angle it still grinds. Any ideas?

Low levels of power steering fluid perhaps?

Lack of fluid or dodgy PAS pump drive I reckon.

Lift the bonnet and there is a large black screw cap just by the radiator in the nose of the car on the drivers side. The cap has the dipstick built into it.

I checked the PAS fluid and its fine. Got a friend who owned a 4.2 to take her for a spin and he says that his made the same noise? Kind of a shooshing, grinding noise?

mine makes a shooshing noise but i think that is just the fluid and pump. It doesnt grind. might be worth getting it checked. The power stering pump is on the drivers side at the bottom of the engine. You can see it through the wheel arch if the wheel is taken off.

Make sure there is no discolouration in the fluid too.

For the past 2 days - PC at work wont do a search either.

Mines been like that for 2-3 days. At home and at work seems to time-out and display a page cannot be displayed message. Its been ok since this afternoon though.

Search doesnt time put any more = but it wont even find the word 'and' or the word 'cerbera' - so it still isnt working
