Battery fully charged, car not used for a few weeks, primes but does not turn over.

Is there a specific fuse that might have gone?

Sounds like a sticking starter solenoid, get a trolley jack handle or such like feed it down so it sits on the solenoid and administer a short sharp shock to the solenoid, try cranking the engine. If this fails administer several blows while an able assistant attempts to crank the engine.

Thanks Iain, trying it now.

Hi, nothing, not even a click from the starter when the ignition is turned.

Also sounds like the infamous 'hot start' problem that doesn't always need heat to manifest itself... combination of slightly weaker battery, inadequate feed to the solenoid, and the current requirement of the solenoid can result in lack of starter action. Simple fix (by inserting a relay into the circuit) and details will pop up on searching...

Don't know if this will help you at all, but I had a similar (but not exact) problem to yours the other week. After FIVE weeks, the garage found it was the immobiliser not working properly - was allowing everything to work except the fuel pump. They had to bypass it in the end...

If your pump initialises (I now know what it sounds like ) then obviously it's not that, BUT could be one of the other two parts of the immobiliser?

The guys on here know truckloads more than me, they might tell you I'm talking rubbish. But as they've helped me I thought I'd try and offer *something* back

Good luck.

Try again with lights on... if they don't dim when you turn the key it would indicate solenoid is not drawing current. Been there, got the shirt

Right, tried that, no dimming of the lights, so solenoid not drawing current.

Where are we off to next? (just having a quick bite to eat before getting back into the fray..)

My Griff did this several times last year when hot (embarrassing being pushed off the garage forecourt....). Decided to take the starter off at Easter - not too difficult - stripped it and found deposits of heated, treacley oil on the solenoid armature. Cleaned everything off, re-assembled and re-fitted starter. Been out several times in July when it was a tad warm (!!!!) with no starting problems at all. Low voltage at the coil could be an issue but the clearances in the starter are small and anything that creates drag or stiction can cause failure. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck - Chris

Oh, how I cursed myself for jumping in so certainly on this thread about an hour ago, at Tescos fuel station. Yep, you guessed it, de-immobilised, primed, pushed button (show off, eh?), nothing...zip...zilch...diddley! Repeat for maybe 5 mins in various combinations and voilla, just as I was reaching for the AA card, the bugger goes rolleyes There really is a nasty pernicious sod of a gremiln free with every Tiv isn't there, that just leaps out and bites hard when you smugly think you're on top of things?

So, revised wisdom is, doing the 'hot start' mod won't hurt but other factors seem to be at play too... oh, well, may as well pull and strip the starter. Not been into that yet (not much untouched after 5 + years)

First problem with it: the usual variety of manifestations, but not this one before. Ah well.

Don't know what access is like but you could "flash" a live wire to the solenoid connection(being careful not to earth it) that comes from the ignition switch(thin wire). This will get you past ignition switch/immob etc.
Try it with ignition off and just see if it cranks, that will rule out starter/batt/earth problems. Obviously check everything is clear/neutral(warning - not an insult)

I would check the battery voltage.. charged should read 12.4 to 12.6

Also try rocking car in gear this may free a jammed starter.

Jumped it from the landcruiser - no response came the loud reply.
Strange that there is no sound at all from the starter: the primer goes off nice and sharp on presing the key fob button, but not even a click from the starter.

As per earlier part of the thread, in switching on the lights and then trying to start, there is no dimming of the lights, which indicates no draw to the solenoid.

Is there a fuse for the solenoid/starter circuit? Or a relay specific to it?

There wouldn't be if the solenoid has died, hence my earlier suggestion(previous post).

Thanks, with you now: will try this evening.

Another check to try, is to measure the output at the 12v feed to the solenoid (from the ign switch, not the beefy permanent live) BUT I have been caught out by this in that when I did this last a digital meter registered 12v whereas my analogue one showed nothing (there was voltage there but insufficient current to deflect the needle)... a test bulb would do the job.

I'd be interested if anyone knew for sure what the immobiliser afects in the ignition circuitry as I'm beginning to suspect that

Does sound similar to hot start problem. I had all the symptoms quoted and in the end the fix was a replacement starter motor. Since then have used it every day for months without any problems. (While I was at it I also lagged the heater pipes under the passenger footwell as I figure the less heat on the ECU the better).

Hope your back on the road soon......this problem can be soooooooo anoying.

Right, just keeping this near the top out of selfish interest... I've had another bout of non-starts today, and it's driving me nuts mad
