Yes you can but you need a specific make and model of HDD

If you have a look on AVForums there are step by step instructions.

There isnt a Sky+ - PC link due to the Sky box using a proprietary software format but the HDD inside is a standard IDE HDD.

Has anyone figured out how to transfer HD content out of the Sky HD box and onto a Media Center PC yet?

Divnae think it can be done due to the proprietary format its stored in...

Unless you transcode it via the outputs that is.

rofl I expect that makes total sense but, to me, I'm afraid Scotty just told the Captain - "Dinnae transcode the outputs, Captain, the dilithium crystals - they cannae tek it!"

I take it you mean to re-record onto the MCE from the output of the Sky box - normally going to the TV. The same sort of thing as taking a SCART output from my old Sky box to a VCR.

This would be fine - but how do you make it work? Downsides are, of course, a minor loss in quality and the "real-time" nature of the transfer. Has anyone made an HDMI "input" card for a MCE yet?

Yeah, live encoding effectively but the source is a different format so you're transcoding from one format to another.

If you have a look at the technology used in live video broadcast over the web there will be open source video transcoders that could be frigged to make it work.

HDMI input cards, not at the consumer level, certaintly not that I am aware of.

HDMI and HD signals are causing massive issues currently in America as if you have a digitally stored unmanaged HD video stream you are effectively in posession of something thats near as dammit a digital studio master. Which obviously causes sphincter twingage for the content owners.

Indeed I can see why it would: although broadcast HD content may be in high resolution - but the compression level can clearly vary. Sky's HD content can sometimes suffer from compression artefacts - not on BBC HD I might add, but certainly on Sky One HD. So despite being in HD the content isn't really good enough to master an HD-DVD from for example...IMO anyway.

Plotloss, as you seem to be the man who can...

Ever come across a device or combination of devices that can act as a Sky/NTL box and plug in to a PC? Preferably keeping the subscription services.

Not that I know of, Sky like to support the licensed devices which they know of, so the STB market effectively.

There is a Satellite Free to Air card that Hauppage do but I've never come across something with a Sky smartcard reader that does subscription management as such.
