This is probably really basic but not having used Excel that much I'm making a right pigs ear of it! (and I'm feeling dense...)

Have an existing spreadsheet that has in the past been handled by a colleague.

It has 2 columns of note, D contains either dates (which are constantly changing), or the word "outstanding". beside the date or word column E contains a numerical figure.

At the bottom of column E a cell has the function

=E35-SUMIF(D234,"OUTSTANDING",E2:E34) to add up all figures in column E where there is a date in D.

I want to change things a bit, Some cells in D really need to have "expired", so what I need is one cell to add up all figures in column E where it's corresponding cell in D is a date, ignoring figures beside the word "outstanding" OR "expired", one cell to add up all in E where D has the word "Outstanding" and a final one to add up all in E where D has "expired"

Seems simple but I'm boogered if I can get it to ignore both "expired" and "outstanding".

=E35-SUMIF(D2: D34,"OUTSTANDING",E2:E34)- sumif(D2: D34,"Expired",E2:E34)

Or am I not reading the question properly? (as in total of all, take away the outstanding and take away the expired)

extra spaces added to avoid smilie infestation
