I'm sure somebody must have already done this but I'm relatively new to Pistonheads so not certain. Decided that 3 throttle return springs is overkill & made it difficult to drive smoothly. Removbed 1 last weekend & the difference is amazing. As I do about 18,000 miiles p.a. it needs to be nicer to drive than a Sunday toy. Feels faster, smoother with less transmission snatch. Anybody else done this? Dave

Three? Thought two was the norm...? Just don't run one alone as that's asking for disaster...

There's 2 lateral springs at the end of the cable and a coiled spring around the throttle shaft itself. Not sure I'd want to run with just one either!

Sounds like a good thing to try, is it easy to do? Just find the throttle
arm and remove a spring? Forgive my lack of oily knowledge, I'm a computer

yep at the back of the throttle body where the cable goes onto the linkage you will see two springs running parallel just remove one,hey presto lighter throttle.in my opinion totally uneccesary having two.

What's up with yas, you all some sort of southern softies, ickle legs getting tired? laugh Next you'll be fitting powered steering to the cars. boxedin

Sorry couldn't resist. jester

Anyway being serious now angel. I would have thought removing one of the springs would be a bad idea. nono

For 1, you'll be putting more force through the one remaining spring so reducing its life span, and 2, yes it'll make it lighter under foot, but if it does snap when your foot's flat to the floor (with my luck it would if it was me) you'll be stuck at full throttle. yikes

Yes you'd have a spare spring to replace the broken one with, but you'd have to be quick to knock it into neutral and turn the engine off before you ram into the back of someone else and / or cause any damage to the engine as you bounce on the rev limiter. eek

crazycraig you do not need dual springs on a single cable layout,it maybe belt & braces approach on TVR,s part but the butterfly as its own return spring, dual springs on single short cable set/up unneccesary and it wont stress the spring anymore, blimey you would think TVR couldent put a foot wrong sometimes......

Just about every car made has only 1 spring. I'm told it's done as a form of traction control!!! Why would a spring snap anyway? Do you often accelerate at the back of a car flat out, I find you usually do that when overtaking or on a clear, open road. Perhaps I'm maybe a bit cynical but don't think that everything TVR do is perfect either. You only need 2 for competition use for god's sake!!!

I am running one spring, but i used one that is slightly stiffer than a std one as the tickover would not always return to where it should.

I've had a look this afternoon and I reckon they're weedy little springs... certainly wouldn't trust just one plus the clock-spring on the spindle. In fact, I'm thinking of adding a third just to be on the safe side

pupp your joking right...i would hate to know how many valve springs you would fit if you fitted a spiky cam....8 ,10 ,12, how many just to be on the safe side like,,,,he he he .only yanking your chain.

Ditto Brummiewedge. Found it wouldn't return to idle very quick with one spring so I stretched the existing two springs to make them both weaker.

BTW, if you ever do any form of MSA sanctioned motorsport, you'll have to put the second spring back, since dual springs are mandatory.

Springs? pah!... so last year. I'd have positive 'desmo' style closure off the cam

not on your TL though desmo is only for those red bikes that dont rev enough to warrent it they obviously think eveyone else using traditional coil springs is wrong he, he.they can only dream of quality engineering like the japs, doh im getting cloudy.

The desmo system also has a little spring as well as the closing rocker to close the valve fully otherwise it would lead to snapped valves and valves recessed into the head.........good idea tho!
