Hi, I have been thinking of doing my IAM test as although I think I'm a reasonably good driver (doesn't everyone!) I never really feel that my skill level allows me to properly enjoy the potential of my car (an E30 M3).

Looking at their site it seems Chelmsford would be my local IAM crew (I'm in Basildon) so I just wondered if anyone here was a member there that perhaps could give some views on that particular region?

Cheers

Hi Aaaron,

There is a very active Group in Southend, but since you ask, the Chelmsford Group is very successful and rates highly in the national tables. How old are you?

At Chelmsford, under 21s get a full refund of the £75-00 fee - Under 26s get £40-00 refund if they do the course and pass the Test - we have a high pass rate....waiting list about 10 weeks at present.

Chelmsford meet at Essex Police Sports and Social Club on the 2nd Monday of the month...let me know if you need further info?

BOF.

Thanks very much for that- I am just outside the discounted range as I am currently 26. I didn't realise there was a Southend section as well- that would probably be easier for me to get to although if there's a fellow PH'er at the Chelmsford one I am tempted to go slightly out of my way! :-)

I shall check out the link.

The Chelmsford Chairman also posts here as hpc_bod. He mentioned on the IAM thread that another group to consider is ROADAR North East London, depending on where you are.

Hi there,

Firstly, well done for being one of the few who actually realises that a bit of coaching will do wonders for driving your car as it was meant to be driven

However, I wonder whether the IAM is the right route to enjoy an M3. Without doubt, the IAM provides an excellent foundation on which to build. Assuming you get a decent IAM Observer, you'll learn

Nevertheless, 1-2 days with the likes of Cadence or www.ridedrive.co.uk might suit you better. If you can afford it, then I'd recommend the professional route with one of these folks.

Speaking for Chelmsford...our Associates Co-ordinator does think about matching the car to the Observer.

If I got an M3 allocated I would be instructed to leave my cardigan at home.

Ah, is that also 'hpcdriver' from Traffic Answers?

....who IIRC is also called Mark.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Don't know about Traffic Answers, but our revered Chairman is not Mark...don't want to post his name in case I get another chaved up Saxo allocated to me...

'hpcdriver' from Traffic Answers posts as 'waremark' here - IIRC he's not aligned with Chelmsford group but with East Herts & Harlow's. It's all getting a bit incestuous laugh

Well that's cleared up then, thank you very much Dave.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Hi, and apologies for being a bit slack in not looking at the forum for a couple of weeks.

You will be very welcome at Chelmsford with your M3, and we'll endeavour to get you an observer who is familiar with performance cars.

I am personally a bit booked up with my current associate (R32 Golf) and have a commitment to my next one (996-911), but would be happy to take you on around Jan-Feb 07, if you can hang on that long.

Whatever you decide, you will certainly get something from the training.

I started my route to better driving through the IAM, then did RoADA and progressed through to the HPC in 2003.

Feel free to PM me or contact me via the Chelmsford IAM group website (e-mail address is on there) if you'd like any more info.

regards
HPC_BOD

Thanks for the reply- I'm really tied up at work at the moment so I've kind of put this on the back burner for the moment but I will be in touch so Jan-Feb would be ideal.
