Report form Hockenheim NitrOlympix
Discussion
Just got a we connection from the wilds of Northern Sweden, so time for a belated update. Great news at last - I set a new outright European record for a snowmobile over the 1/4 mile at 8.800 seconds at Hockenheim last weekend. Unfortunately the timing system went down and we don't have a slip with the run details, so are treating this as provisional until we get back out there - but the times were witnessed by the FIM team. FYI, the old record is 9.15 secs.
We ran with carbs and an MSD ignition, having given up on the fuel injection and ECU for the time being. The nitrous system was jetted for 150bhp (giving a total of 435bhp from 1000cc!) and the gas delivered straight into the bellmouths via 4mm tubing - simple but very effective.
This was set on my first proper run on the machine - we had very limited setup on the back straight of the F1 track beforehand, so there is a lot more to come, particularly from tuning the clutches as I had a very soft launch. I previously raced in the Saturday night show against a Super gas car on a damp track. I smoked the belt off the line, then aborted when he spun backwards into the wall - a wild experience! He was very shaken but managed to have several beers at the top end. It was an incredible atmosphere up there with nitro funny cars arriving and us diving into beers to overcome the excitement. We went through 2 cases up there!
I also lost time at the top end as I siezed the motor with a holed piston - the high pressure fuel system dropped out due to a relay shaking apart. I am now moving to solid state relays, plus will add a pressure switch to inhibit the gas if this happens again. We plan to run again at the Euro Finals at Santa Pod (subject to agreement with the organisers) and making the record official!
