Ah the comic solution . I've tried this approach before, and preferred not to be the driver.
In this case, does anyone know how to get the airbag off (prior to the explosion)

Yes, I've removed the airbag when I changed my steering wheel on my VU Ute.
Yep, it seems a bit hairy! but it's not as scary as it first looks.
I would first see whether there are any warranty issues about removing the airbag.
