Every now and then my computer will simply not find some web pages or take several mins to go from page to page if it does find it. I've checked on another computer (Brothers) and the site works fine. For 3 days now I can't get www.s14.net but nearly every other web page is fine. It used to happen with PH ,but now that's fine ? No amount of turning the computer on or off does anything and the last time it happpend, it cured its self only to happen a month later.

Thanks

Try deleting your 'temporary files'/cache/'offline files'.

(They are all the same thing just depends which web browser you use).

If you are using firefox try opening the page with IE or visa versa to check whether it's just your browser playing up.

Step A: Use Mozilla Firefox (and always get the latest version).

Step B: Run this: www.smartprotector.com/eraser/downloads/smartprotectorsetup.exe
*this app will clear all the crud out of the temp folders.

If it's address specific it may be a DNS caching problem. Try flushing the DNS cache:

c:> ipconfig /flushdns

I downloaded Firefox - no difference. All the same web pages as before are still not working.
Cleared every cookie and temp internet file without any difference.
The last suggestion to try means nothing to me as my knowledge of computers is very limited.
Thanks for the time taken and the suggestions so far. Anything else I can try ?

Cheers

ipconfig /flushdns

Open a command prompt window. Usually Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt. This should show a rather unfriendly looking black window that you can type commands into.

Type in this command:

ping www.s14.net

What this command does is convert the domain name (www.s14.net) to a network address and then try to reach that network address. The output will show whether your computer is able to convert the name to an address, and whether it can reach the address. If it's successful, the output should be similar to this:

C: Documents and Settings Peter>ping www.s14.net

Pinging www.s14.net [69.94.33.59] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 69.94.33.59: bytes=32 time=83ms TTL=234
Reply from 69.94.33.59: bytes=32 time=82ms TTL=234
Reply from 69.94.33.59: bytes=32 time=81ms TTL=234
Reply from 69.94.33.59: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=234

Ping statistics for 69.94.33.59:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 80ms, Maximum = 83ms, Average = 81ms

If yours is different, let us know what it says and this will show what is going wrong.

Does this http://69.94.33.59 Work?

If so try Start => run and type ipconfig /flushdns (it'll do the flash up black box thing)

Good, that means you can stop worrying about DNS or routing problems, it's something at a higher level. Check your web proxy configuration for any domain-specific settings, and also see whether you have got any domain-specific security settings.

Who is your ISP as some have proxies between you and the website you are looking for to try and save on bandwidth. These can cause the problems you are having

I'm with NTL. I could just about get the sites affected ( www.s14.net : www.allofmp3.com : www.s14power.com ) this morning with a 3 min wait between pages. It's a bit hit and miss though, as sometimes it won't find a thing and revert to the Dell search page.
Just to add to my problems,I now find I can't view videos on Youtube.com and several other sites.Youtube says "JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player" so I downloaded the flash player and it says it was installed ok, but the probelm is still there. I've looked at the Java section in ' My Control Panel ' and can't see anything that says it's on or off or how to do so.........aghhhhhhhhhhhhh,all this on top of car problems means hitting both offenders with a large hammer is a very real possibility

I knew you would say NTL

If you can view these two sites you might be able to try the remedies to see if its proxy cache problems

www.nthellworld.co.uk/home?nav=tools&exec=proxy

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.

Sorry, no sympathy on the car side as I've managed to lose 2 clutches in the last couple of weeks on a Cerbera and a Landy 90. If it hadn't been chucking it down this weekend I would have been under the Landy with a big hammer

One last thing , why does this file keep coming up and staying in the temp internet files even after I've deleted everything ?
