More Timing Chain Paranoia
Discussion
Hello,
I have read quite a bit on this site about the timing chain/tensioner issue. All the info talks of a rattle on startup. I have a 98 XJR that sounds fine when you startup but after it gets warmed up you can hear a rattle from, what sounds like, the front of the engine. Also, it only seems to do it in neutral not when you are moving. Does this sound like the timing chain issue or could it be something else.
cheers,
Neil

Neil,
Don't wait for a loud rattle...you may not get it! That is just a generalisation myth
Get them checked as soon as possible. Even if you open it up and all is well, you can still change them to the latest MkIII version to ensure a long life, depending on which type you have fitted.

Just a quick note to let you know that there was a problem with the tensioners so I had all the chains and all the tensioners replaced. It is now quieter, faster and smoother than ever before!!
I had it done at Northwest XJ Services in Platt Bridge near wigan and they did a fantastic job! (They even got my warranty company to pay for most of the work - a feat in itself!!!). Even without the warranty it would have cost less than half the price of the Jaguar Dealer.
