After spending many hours reading various posts and threads here and taking on board all your views in what to look for in a Cerb, i have made the jump and looking at getting a Cerb, i have already seem many one thing i do notice when comparing Log Book Details with Vin Plates is that the Engine numbers on the Vin plate seem to have a few extra digits/ letters befor the common 4200...etc can anyone help what this is what it means? As log book has engine numbers of 7 digits but Vin plate has 11 Digits/letters?
Also does anyone know where is the engine number located on the block?
Another question as im on the subject what does the Body Code mean on the Vin plate as there is no mention of this on the Log Books.
Sorry for all the questions but when im looking at the details of what im about to buy i seem numbers not matching, just want to get everything right before hand.

could be wrong but the log book only usually show`s the part that`s unique to your car,
the first few munbers/letters are usually the same for all the models of that car
so can be omitted.
wouldn`t worry too much about numbers matching up on these cars as long as there is some documentation for this,as there must be quite a few cars that have had engine swap`s etc.
when my first went bang from new(4.2,)had a new engine fitted with no number on the new one at all!.

Thanks for that so the first few digits on the engine number would be the same on all cerb 4.2's? Where does the body code come from would this be the same on all 4.2's sorry for sounding dumb but just trying to get my head around the way that TVR work im sure when i get one it will learn its quirks fast!!!

The Engine Number has nothing to do with the VIN Number. My VIN Number is 17 digits, Engine No: is 7 digits. The VIN Number is the important one, make sure this matches what is on the Reg Document, and also in the Owners Manual. I wouldnt worry about other numbers, there are more important things to worry about/Look for when buying a Cerb
Body Code is usually on the Inner front N/S Wing, and contains the Paint Colour code.
The Engine number is on the Back of the block.
Sorry jensena i was getting confused i ment the engine numbers on the cahssis plate has more digits than on the log book, The VIN numbers match up on both plate and book, just getting confused with it all, where abouts on the Inner front N/S wing will i find the body code? I suppose im being to picky but just want to end up with the right Cerb as i have spent so long looking at them waying up the pros/cons i thought may as well spend that extra little bit more getting everything right.
So what is the outcome of these extra few letters/digits at the begining of the engine number where do they come from?

SDL CA 11Ax WB00 1234 would be the 234rd 4.2 AJP Cerbera built in 1998.

SDL at the beginning of the chassis number is a TVR Unique ID
The next four characters are as follows:
4.2 AJP CERBERA -CAT = FAC2
4.5 AJP CERBERA GT-CAT = FAC5
4.2 AJP CERBERA -NON-CAT = FAN2
4.5 AJP CERBERA GT-NON-CAT = FAN5
The next is a P for Petrol engine
The next is 1-10 or an X, this is an internal check digit that can tell if the chassis number is a genuine one.
The tenth digit is the Year code V=97 T= 96 S=95 etc
The next (11th.) is a month in build code. A=Jan B=Feb etc. Except I
The 12th & 13th are just 0 & 1 not used for any purpose.
The last four digits are the sequential build number for the Year starting at 1000.
SDL FAC5 P x V L 01 1200 (example only) would be a 4.5litre AJP Petrol Engined Cerbera Built around November 1997, the 200th built in 1997.

Bear in mind that there may be a considerable delay between the month the build started & the vehicle being registered, especially if the vehicle was a cancelled order or a dealer demo.

Comparing my Chassis number with the info above, my car was the 81st car built during 1998 (not sure how many cars were built that year) but was regested 28/8/98. Perhaps the main dealer didn't want to sell it straight away..they liked it too much.
