When you start your new 599, the default transmission setting is fully AUTO. I drove a UK 56 plate 430 and now ALL Ferrari F1's do the same. Of course, when you pull the "up" paddle, it'll switch to manual.
At £205,000 for a specced 599, I'd rather spend the extra £40K and get a Carrera GT or the LP640. Irrespective of laptimes, I just think this 599 is going to FEEL like an Enzo engined cruiser.(certainly looks like a barge)
I may get flamed for this, others may think it insignificant, but I reckon this default auto thing is a telling indication of where Ferrari's products are going.......
......Anyone got a black 355 GTB for sale? or a 512BB?

How can it start in Auto - I thought that you had to be in 1st (over over) to select auto on any F1/e-gear system?

Start the car up (in neutral), pull up for first and away you go... LIKE NORMAL......
........BUT instead of clattering into the limiter as you would do in Manual mode, it's fully auto and will change up and down for you until you override the system.

Yes, well a CGT or LP640 would probably be a better place for a "Dark Lord" to "propogate evil".

Think the 599 may be aimed at a slightly wider market though, some of whom may be using city's (rather than living in underground lairs), where an auto mode can be handy.

Why?
Is Ferrari beyond criticism?
Have you driven ever driven a 599? or a 430?

A modern Ferrari CLASSY???? Hmmm.... that's open to serious debate. Are you sure you're not confusing "class" with "crass."
If "class" was all I wanted I'd probably be in a DB9.

PST - why not have a permanently automatic transmission on a Ferrari then? Will suit all the "city" dwellers.... I'm sure.

Hey don't tell me.....
Ferrari IS beyond criticism. They're ALL exceptionally classy. Astons are NOT. Auto's suit Ferraris just fine. Supercars can never be crass.

I made the point that it looks like Ferrari may be softening their cars (and IMO the 599 looks like crap) and that's a crock of shit is it?

Who made YOU God? What a D1CK.
Jeez sorry for posting.

Ferrari are trying to play to a wider audience with each model in their current line up. Fair play to them and commercially it makes sense. Unfortunately, the purist will always suffer as a result. The 599 is a great car and yes I have driven one. Would I buy one? No, because it has somehow lost the emotion of the 550, a purists car.

i dont see the problem with this guys post

its a definite change if they are starting them in auto mode. Its either a ploy to get people to think that the car works fine in auto mode (well it will have to have come on from the 355 and 360 somewhat then!) or else an indication that it really does work. 355/360 were all clutch slip in auto, and dealers told you to keep clear of using it.

Dont see why ferrari and maserati dont offer a full auto. Each to their own and all that. They could offer a full auto with paddles. My merc sl55 has that and its pants in terms of feel and involvement but some people want an auto and its not totally out of character with the GT cars
