Lancia launches new concept

Is this the return of a once-great marque?

none
none

Lancia is launching the Delta HPE Concept, with the world premiere taking place at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival, starting on 30 August.

The Italian company reckons its car takes its inspiration from the practical, sporty, elegant Lancia Beta HPE from the late 1970s and offers "an up-to-date take on the idea of a sporty yet practical saloon". This medium-sized vehicle is said to provide roominess in the back and travelling comfort, accessibility, and a versatile, modular and capacious boot coupled with a "compellingly slender, sporty shape".

The concept is intended to draw from a century of experience to continue the tradition of the great medium-sized Lancia cars: the Aprilia, the Appia, the Fulvia, the Lancia Beta HPE, the Prisma, the Dedra and the Lybra.

Four Lancia qualities embodied include:

  • Styling that reinvents the Lancia tradition with original body features: an overhanging 'flying bridge' roof, a large rear window without a lower frame and a chrome grille that reinterprets the classic Lancia grille of the 1950s for a new generation. A flash of chrome along the side underlines a great expanse of glass and adds an extra sporty touch to the side panels.
  • The second quality of the new car's design, reckons Lancia, is plenty of room for driver and passengers -- said to be limo-like. Its sliding rear seat with reclining backrest allows the 400-litre boot size to be increased or it can be pushed back and tilted for total relaxation, like a business class seat on an intercontinental flight.
  • Quality of life on board -- it's quiet due to its sound-absorbent roof -- plus plenty of light due to a generous sunroof and side windows. Its also got an automatic dual zone climate control system, and a good quality Bose stereo with steering wheel controls, that includes a Windows Mobile-based system combining Bluetooth technology with a USB port that allows you to use your MP3 players or USB flash drive.
  • Interior design -- Lancia is trading on its Italian heritage and interiors that complement the exterior lines with a passenger compartment that's "a veritable lounge, where the facia, door panels and front and rear seats are the highest expression of Italian exclusivity".
  • Top-quality materials used for looks and touch sensations they offer: including wood trim, chrome detailing, Alcantara and leather upholstery and velour mats.

Finally, the Delta HPE concept is designed to be equipped with a wide selection of petrol and turbocharged diesel engines with power ratings ranging from 120bhp to over 200bhp, combined with six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes, plus tried and tested mechanicals using SDC suspension with electronic damping control.

Lancia didn't tell us if it plans to produce the car, nor what its plans are for the UK, from whence the marque has been long gone, leaving behind a slightly bitter taste of disappointment, given the poor quality of the products that remain, coupled with a sense of regret about what might or could have been.

Here's hoping that if the marque does return, it'll be with a fresh approach, exciting cars and modern manufacturing methods.

take a BMW Series 1, take an Audi in equal parts, gently stir for 10 minutes. Pour on a white marble stand, add a pretty girl and serve chilled

Surely this car is way better looking than a 1-Series (though that's not saying much ;-) )

First time I've seen chrome side strips described as being 'sporty'...

Not much of a "concept car", looks like it came out of the showroom yesterday. Reminds a bit of the new Seat range too (though which one I can't tell as they all look the bloody same).

Utterly horrendous, who signs these designs off! Do they really think people will buy this over an Alfa Brera, Audi A3 or the like? Please please please..

According to my info / sources, this Delta will be in production and based on the Grande Punto.

Wikipedia: "Lancia is an Italian automobile manufacturer founded in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia and which became part of the Fiat group in 1969. It was the first company to produce a V6 engine and a V4 engine. However, these engines had extremely narrow angulation of less than 30 degrees, instead of the ideal of 60 degrees for a V6 and 90 degrees for a V4 (or V8). This meant that the banks of cylinders overlapped at the end near the crankshaft. During the 1980s, the company cooperated with Saab Automobile, with the Lancia Delta being sold as the Saab 600 in Sweden. The 1985 Lancia Thema also shared a platform with the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma and the Alfa Romeo 164."

100 year anniversary now at Torino . . . www.lancia100years.com/

Can't say I like that at all. Much prefer the Alfa Brera if I was wanting a nice looking Italian car.

Also, if it takes inspiration from the old Lancia Beta, why call it a Delta? I'd be happier if they just put the Delta Integrale back into production.

Front looks like a Leon, back looks like a Lexus RX !

What is it with cars these days, they appear taller and narrower - like mpvs!

Lets hope they do not use the same steel as used in the last Beta,
mine used to go faster the older it got, as huge chunks of metal kept flying off making it lighter.

I don't mind the front, but the back end's been designed by a complete moron;

1. Its very ugly.
2. Look a the size of that C-pillar, and then the wheel arch extension with the window sloping up, imagine trying to park this thing! I'm guessing the parking sensors will be a very expensive option and necessary as you cannot see where you are going!

More news: Y.

The Lancia Musa is an underated car BTW. What a luverly and spacious thingy. Elegant and classy. I don't know of any car in the price bracket / size that I'd have over one.

Thesis is gorgeous too . . . But then, who has done a testride . . . A shame Lancia's PR is not good. The firm is run by technicians.

I actually saw one of these the other day. Looks even worse in the metal. The new Lancia, although not as bad as that monstrosity, is no looker either. All in my opinion.

The Rodius is indeed foul. Although having seen a few of them on the road and seen endless photos of them, I've now grown used to them. I mean, I still don't like them, but the crying and sleepless nights have now stopped, thank God.

The Lancia is not nice.

Wow! A new Lancia with the Windows operating system for the stereo. Why oh why didn't Audi or BMW think of that?? So many jokes, I don't know quite where to begin ... Oh alright then "Why must we open the windows to change the music on the MP3 player, it's raining?"

Too true.. The Fulvia concept looked lovely and properly marketed could have sold well.. But I do wish that they would allow the engineers to design the cars rather than the bean counters. The V4 of the Fulvia was a gem. Sadly I suspect that the new Delta will simply be another re-badged Fiat.. So no better than anything else out there.

Front end isn't particularly great, then gets worse as you get near the back resembling a large ugly rollerboot! vomit

What do car designers get paid for these days I wonder, and what happened to beautiful Italian cars?
