I have been contemplating the purchase of a Chim for ages and am getting near to making the jump. I am looking for an early ish model and have wonder about the 4.3. I haven't read/seen too much about this particular variation of the Chim's engine. Is there anything specifically to know and is there much difference between this one and the standard 4 litres and others?
Many thanks.
Many thanks.
Hi there
You've asked about the 4.3. I've recently bought one (June). To be honest it was out ignorance, because I was only interested in getting a good car and a reasonable price.
It has an Adams rolling chip (more to do with petrol management - leaner and meaner) and does reduce the bhp, but that's not really a problem with the 4.3
as you're usually well admired by those that a) don't have a Chim b) not all Chim owners would know unless you told them, but they'd like it anyway!
My partner called Austec (manufacturers of the chip) asked about the engine size, their response, if it's in good condition, then have it, because only a limited number were made.
I'm part of WWM, the Regional Officer has a 4.3 too, and I keep getting told 'good choice!'.
Follow your heart and keeping looking till you find what you want!

Had a 4.3 Chim before the Tuscan & before buying I must have driven over a dozen cars (4.0, 4.3 & 4.5) I bought the 4.3 even though it was older than some of the others because it felt the best sorted & it proved to be a fantastic decision. Still miss it now despite the Tuscan. (I have since driven a 5lt & this is an entirely different ball park & the one I would go for if I return to the Chim fold)

I've got a 4.3 as well as a couple of 500 in my ever growing stable, mines marked as a Big Valve, yet to be confirmed but it does a pretty good job of keeping up with the 500s, sounds nicer too despite all my cars having standard exhausts and the fact its got a CAT, wich I understand is unusual for a 93. If you find a good one, go for it, its nice to have something unusual wich is why I have gone out of my not to get a 4.0, just check the chassis well and make sure the engine numbers match ect, good luck.
I'm always ready to plug the humble 4.3, they do have a slight rarity value. As others say, at this age there is little or no difference in price between engine sizes. I chose between a 4.0 and mine which were pretty much identical condition, price etc but the extra (quoted) power made me choose the 4.3

Samantha can I ask what major differences, if any, did you notice since you had the Mark Adams chip installed ? I have slight hesitance problems low down the rev range and intermittent cutting out problems which I'm hoping a MA chip will cure ? How much BHP did you loose ?
Cheers
Neil.
Hi Neil
I hoped the same when i got my Chim 400 MAchipped and RRd but id didn`t. I´m shure other people have made different experiences but for me it didn`t workout. As for the promised and measured Powergains I can´t tell ´cause i´m still running in the new cam(218).
Cheers Jens
Sorry for the slight threadhighjack!

Erm thanks Samantha that will mostly me then!
I have had my 430 for over 3 years now, bought it with 80K on the clock, drove it reasonably hard and was always impressed with the way it shook a stick at 500's etc, always revved nice and freely and never had any problems.
That said I wanted to do something with the engine after it had been taken out of the car as part of the body off restoration.
When I had the opportunity to speak to the folk that built the RV8's for TVR (TVRPower) a lot of the lads said that the sweetest engine they built was the 430, a nice free revving engine that gave good performance without issues....and this would be the one they would choose.
I had the chance of a very good 500 which was on the money, but I decided to stick to my 430 and have Jamie of Castle Race Engines breath his magic into it!
I have NO regrets over this decision, he knew what I wanted produced the goods and didn't charge me anything more than we had agreed, his support since has been second to none. I was so impressed with the engine performance on the way back from Blackpool (Back Home Event) I felt the need to call him when I pulled up on my drive after a 150 mile blat just to say thanks bescause I was sooo impressed!!
As with everything there are good ones and bad one's, and it is a personal thing, that said they are A1 banana!
The only other engine I would want is a 450 AJP!

I bought a 430 early this year, absolutely superb car.I took the car to TVR Power for a check over, they told me the 4.3 was the best engine package they had done, apart from the 4.3 big valve.
John,
Yep that sounds familiar they should know they built them...and the rest of the RV8's, hope that things are good with you mate, see you at the Bullsz next weekend?
Steve.
Have owned 4.0 & 5.0ltr Chims, now have a 4.3 which i find the most fun!!. Revs very freely, is not far behind the 5.0 through the gears, if at all.
Mike @ Horizon said what a great car it was after performing servicing. Have fitted Nitrons this year which has transformed handling!
